It is possible that The Boeing Co. lost fair and square to the superior characteristics of the A330-based tanker -on paper-
the RFP was originally written for an airplane the size of the Boeing offering, the 767. in the final two weeks of the process, they changed key components of the bid to allow the larger A-330 competitor. Boeing bid the RFP, Airbus didn't.
and Alabama is supposed to benefit from *some* of the assembly work, but the fact of the matter is, EADS is a foreign company
the A-330 freighters will be assembled in Alabama. Some new jobs will be created however the Boeing Built product would've created as many as 40,000 new jobs in the US.
(...they don't even have a U.S. presence yet -which I'm convinced is the entire purpose of their 'partnership' with Northrup Grumman), the majority of the work and money -paid with our taxes- will break land speed records heading across the pond with very little benefit to the U.S. or the American people.
When France sent out proposals for one of their military aircraft, they stated that it must be a French built aircraft. Boeing would not have been allowed to bid on the work. Unfair?
I'm certainly not arguing that Boeing should have won no matter what ...but, pretty stupid move on the part of the Air Force when the country is facing a major recession. What ever happened to "taking care of our own"? Where's the loyalty, Air Force?!?
At the announcement on friday, they never mentioned EADS (parent of Airbus) but continually referred to Nothrup Grumman...trying to say that it is an american company (using foreign equipment)
BTW...the A-330 was developed with the aid of government subsidies to Airbus, many protests have been lodged with the WTO in regards to the unfair practices that Airbus opeates under where Boeing or any other American company has to compete by themselves without government aid.
And so, in 2013, you will finally get to see it all ...an airplane proudly displaying an American flag, flown by American pilots, and built by the French ...or, I hope it's still the American flag by then. It could very well be the MexicanGermanFrenchAmerican flag.
So..
In the future when France doesn't like a foreign policy or defence issue taken by the US, will they not send us the replacement parts needed for our foreign built tanker fleet?
