That's an old wives tail , reserved for classic cars with old style fabric seals that already had poor oil control. Unless your bike was horribly neglected and the oil burnt and run way over change mileage several times, it should be fine. I bought my 91 Berreta GT at 185,000 miles, and started using synthetic when I bought it to no ill effect. It had 265,000 when I finally gave it away....

EDIT: you can buy dino oil from the dealer. I've read about others using regular car oil, 10W40 and 20W50, but I can't verify the results, so I don't suggest you do that.
