If 4K is your budget, look at buying a used older model Ninja 250. At the $3500 MSRP, you might be hard pressed to even get the new one OTD for 4K. Dealers in California are selling them for over 5K from what I hear. In any regards, you can get a used older model 250 with some life left in it for under 2K, which leaves you some money to spend on gear. You might even locate a used 500 within your budget.

FWIW, don't get too wrapped up in looks... it will probably be your first of many bikes. When you're out rolling around enjoying your bike you seem to forget about scratches, how old your bike looks, etc. Or at least that is my experience.

Have you looked into the MSF course yet?
