What in the world?!?

I saw and read news reports that stated the (1) Pentagon is concerned that they won't have any funds to pay soldiers in Iraq and Afghastan on June 15 2008 unless Congress gives approval to allow the Pentagon to move funds from other accounts.

I know from govt accounting that once most goverment accounts are approved and funded that money has to be used specifically for the intended purposes. But, geez, these are our men and women who volunteered to defend this country and her interests in the world.

(2) Again I like cbs earlyshow but, there was a story about a father who visited his son at a stateside army base barracks after his son and fellow soldiers had been fighting in Afganstan for months. The father took pictures of the deplorable living conditions in the barracks in which one soldier stood on the sink while trying to either unclog a restroom overflow or mop up it; broken toliet seat; broken light fixtures, etc. The dad said that while his son and fellow army buddies made joke about the barracks living conditions vs living in Afghanstan that he (dad) had to hide his anger for how the soldiers had to live. After going public, the military was bringing maintenance teams to fix up the place.

(3) cbs evening news reported about a soldier who came back from Iraq and entered college expecting to use the $40,000 benefits that were promised to enlistists. He found out that he wasn't going to all of the benefits, may have to sit out college, and was currently working with a US legislator to change the benefit structure.

When Bush I first gave the order to send troops to defend Kuwait, I want to say that there was a news report that said that Kuwaiti enlisted soldiers were getting around $60,000 US dollars and showed the living quarters of a few Kuwaiti soldiers. It was back in the 90s. No definitive proof to back it up.

Point: Our government needs to take better care of the people fighting for this country and stop wasting money on useless pork bills and the like.

It's bad enough that fighting soldiers are suffering from PTSD after returning home. But to take away their playboys and penthouse, I'm a Christian and even I don't agree with banning those magazines from military bases. Let's keep the people who are trained to kill, have access to heavy artillery and dangerous weapons, and who volunteer to risk their lives very happy and nicely compensated.
