Bandit 1250. There is a brand new 07 on sale around here for 7200. Add to that another 1200 for aftermarket hard bags and the optional lowers. Those things can be removed from "fun" riding, or added on as necessary for more comfortable 2-up riding.
I was looking at a triumph tiger. if you want the DS style, that bike had a very nice looking second seat that your wife would probably like.
The ZRX1200 would probably be comparable. Also a used Honda 919.
