by running hot what do you mean like the pipes are glowing red or the jug is getting realy hot ? if thats the case like mrgiggles said the cooling fins on the jug could be covered with mud or filled with mud preventing air flow across to cool due to mud will hold in heat...is this machine liquid cooled by chance.... if so does the fan kick on ?if not liquid cooled some people have put electric fans in the front to help cool the jug blowing air acrossed it and the other thing that could cause high engine temp is the motor is running to lean on fuel its good to make power but the side effects are higher engine temps and burning up the valves and or piston or piston sieze to the piston wall id try cleaning and readjusting the carb first off and doing a good engine clean with a pressure washer and pay close attention to the coolin fins on the jug and then make sure the crank case is also clean as well any mud will hold in the heat and after all that id change the oil and filter and use a quality brand non synthetic oil cause if the oil temp got hotter than what it was designed for it will not protect the motor bearings and such when you drian the oil out itll probably come out like water and really black take some oil and put in the engine while the drain bolt is still out and and flush out that nasty oil get a couple of extra qts of oil to do this flush of the bottom of the crank case do not start the motor with drain bolt out when the oil comes out clear then put the drain bolt back in and fill to spec with the new oil ...hope this may quide you in a repair -corey-
