Personally, I would wait on getting a new one. Find an inexpensive used medium-sized bike and play awhile until you get used to it and want a bigger one. (It won't take long.) THEN go to a dealer (I know of a great one in Red Lodge MT

) and find a nice 800 or bigger.
As for learning? Find an MSF course near you and take it. You will be very glad you did.
