The filter is intended to trap any insolubles larger than about 30 microns.
Some filters are pretty effective down to about 10.

WHAT does it trap? Primarily larger metallic wear debris and "dirt" that has bypassed the air filter and contaminated the oil from the breather and blown by the rings.
