During the colder months I wear the HT 2.0 pants that go with my First Gear Kilimanjaro jacket. Other than those times I wear chaps whenever I ride. It only takes one rock, the size of a pin head, hitting your jean covered shin or knee while riding at any decent highway speed to make you say things aloud to no one and desperately try to "rub that hurt away", while maintaining forward motion. Chaps are a cheap answer to the "road crap" and/or bug slamming problem. Leather or textile overpants are great for long rides in cooler weather and the proper set up like I have with my cold gear can let you keep the separate rain gear at home, saving you space.
Bottom line. Buy some chaps
