A few weeks ago there was a discussion about ripping CDs and what to do with the CDs after all the music is on your computer. Some people said they wanted to keep their CDs and other thought it was best to just pitch them. Because we're getting ready to move and trying to reduce our belongings by about 50%, I wanted to get rid of the CDs when I was done ripping them. But the hubby wanted to keep them. They filled eight book boxes, and that was just too much space. So this is what I decided to do.
First, I ripped all of the CDs to my husband's computer. (He had never done this; instead, he was taking CDs into work and listening to them on a portable CD player, despite the fact that his [former] company gave everyone video iPods last year.] Then I sorted them on the pool table according to type of music (four major categories) and then by artist within each category. I ended up with four groups: jazz (Alan has a LOT of jazz), rock, country (the smallest group), and one group that was a mix of things like classical, opera, reggae, cajun, blues, bluegrass, international, etc. This is what the sorted CDs looked like this morning when I started the final step (excuse the mess in our basement; we have boxes everywhere):
Then I started putting the CDs in the four 240-CD wallets I bought online (I ran out of room and had to use a fifth wallet I had some other CDs in). This involved taking the CD out of the jewel case, taking the cover out of the jewel case (and cutting the top page off the booklet if the cover wasn't a single sheet of paper), then putting the CD into the wallet with the cut-out cover sheet on top. I did this extra step to make it easy to see what the CD is because a lot of times the printing on the CD itself is hard to read. The end result looks like this:
As I worked, the stacks slowly disappeared...
And then I was finally done!
It took eight hours today to put all the CDs in the wallets, and I ended up with eight big plastic trash bags full of empty jewel cases. But I'm really glad I decided to do this.
My back is killing me. Now I need a good stiff drink!
