take the speedo cable off the front wheel drive unit, unscrew the fitting that is at the end of the cable, and pull it off, the inner cable should have two tabs at the end, kinda like a center slot, which fit against an inner piece on the housing of the drive, if they are broken, you have to replace the cable, and that has nothing to do with your motor running rugh, is a mechanical driven speedometer, good luck.
