My 1600 classic got around 42 on this same bike route I have ridden on numerous occasions. For the life of me I can't believe that the Harley engineers are that much smarter than the Japanese. I have a friend with an 08 Ultra Classic and he gets 46-48 mpg on the highway.
I've got the 1700 LT. At first I was only getting about 35 mpg like you. Now with 4200 miles on it I'm averaging 39 mpg combined highway and city. Get 40 on the interstate at 80 mph. Slow down below 72 and she will get 42 mpg. Real pleased with the improved mileage. Bike begs to be ridden. A good bike for the long haul even in the LT model. Gotta get a good luggage rack.
