Equally important or maybe even more so is the filter. Paper element filters filter down to 20 to 35 microns. Since your engine was built with a tolerance of 20 microns the dirt passing through your filter scratches the cylinder walls, rings, bearings and pistons. Many of the new filters are synthetic (polyester) and filter between 12 and 20 microns which tells us that the carbon and dirt are so small they will essentially pass through with little wear damage.

In summary you can save money with a Fram from Walmart or save your engine.
