I'm not sure whether anyone is still watching this thread or not but... I just checked the spare rack of carbs I bought for my 1982 KZ750 Spectre and the slides should NOT be hit by the choke butterflies. Each slide has a notch in it that keeps the butterflies from contacting them. I may be wrong but it sounds to me like the slides have been oriented incorrectly during a past rebuild. You might want to remove the top cap and make sure the rubber diaphram is facing the correct way. There should be a small "tab" which sticks out very slightly from the edge. This little "tab" should be facing the mixture screw that's on the throttle blade side of the carbs. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures to show you exactly what I'm talking about but things SHOULD be more clear once you take off the top cap and notice that the diaphram isn't completely round and neither is the groove the edge of the diaphram fits into. Best of luck!
