A trick which has saved my butt more than once: whenever possible, run alongside the "gap" between the cars in adjacent lanes... even if the cars in that lane are tailgating and too close together, a two car length open gap is enough to dive into when some brain dead moron suddenly changes lanes into you or merges without giving you anyplace to be.
If you are cruising next to a car, you have no place to go but the hospital.
