I would guess about 1/4 of them break, some do no real big damage when they snap.
Others send metal thru the whole motor and its now junk.
I am on my secong KLR650, I did the doo on my 1999, and it was fine when I replaced it at something like 15,000 miles.
The 08 I have now has been upgraded to a better lever, but some report he spring still needs replacing as its too long.
I will do my doo this winter on it as well.
Go to KLR650.net and order the parts from the guy on their named Eaglemike....he is an awesome dude.
Its an easy fix, and better than a toasted motor.
