Is it a twin cylinder motorcycle engine complete with transmission and a chain sprocket compatible splined output shaft, or is it a power unit engine that is just an engine with a drive shaft sticking out one end and the alternator or magneto on the other?

If it is a twin cylinder motorcycle engine, then I suspect you have one of the units for the 1990's era EL250 Eliminator. If so, they take two carburetors and the assembly runs about $600.

If it is a single cylinder motorcycle engine, then it is likely the KLR250 engine, which only takes one carburetor.

Thank you very much for your inquiry of August 13 in which you ask about
the vehicle model and the model year of the engine with its serial number,
KL250DE041735.

According to our record, it was installed on the 1995 model KLR250, model
code:KL250D.

We hope this is of some help for you.

Kind regards.

It would definitely be protected if still in the crate. I had a good friend who bought a WWII surplus Harley 45ci flat head engine in the crate back in 1975. I saw it in the crate, so I know it was authentic. Not even serial numbers on them though.

It was covered with preservatives, had all ports capped, and cosmoline in the distributor (if any of you are old enough to know what that is, tell the others). He put it in an old hardtail frame with a Sportster front end and to my knowledge is still riding it.

By the way, the KL in the serial number pretty much gave away what it was... KLRs are listed as KLs sometimes and the numbers start that way too, I believe. Now today when I get up to my former place of residence to go riding this weekend I'm going to look at the numbers on my KLX to see if it starts with the KL designation...

Gonna be a good day to ride Sunday and I'm gonna be riding a lot. First a Fall Foliage tour with some friends, then a 110 mile trip home.
