Default Converting KDX 200 or 220 to Street Legal?

Hello,

I'm a new member, interested to get back into dual sport riding in addition to my street Sport Touring habit. Please forgive my ignorance on KDX products, I'm just not familiar with the product and could not find my information on this question on the forum search. I've been interested in the KDX for several years as I love the 2 stroke power bands (fond memories growing up as a kid-am I dating myself?)

I was thinking of buying a 200 or 220 model and converting to street legal (dual sport tires, dot headlamp, turn signals, etc)

Has this been done by other members, is it expensive/difficult, any year models that are better than others to do this with?

Thanks for your help.

Its really dependant on the laws of where you live, so call your local motor vehicle body of the government and they can likely gove you some answers.

I can tell you what would be the issues here where I live.

It needs signal light, brake lights, headlight, tail light, license plate light, a horn, dot tires, and a gas tank that is DOT approved, and here the plastic stock gas tank is not.
Then it would have to pass a noise test, and then they might if they are in a good mood, allow it to become street legal.
I swear it depends on the mood of the person, as I have done a few offroad bike conversions to onroad status, and I also know several other peopel that have to.

One day they let stuff just slide and approve a bike.
The next day they will fail it.

I was making 2 Honda XR650R's street legal a few years ago.

Both bikes were identical, right down to the model of tires, chain, colour, year, brand of lights, exhaust etc.
I mean identical.
The first one I finished passed easily.
I got bike # 2 done maybe 3 weeks later, and it failed.
I took it back home waited about 2 weeks, and took the bike back, not having altered a single solitary item..................And you guessed it, they passed it the second time.
My theory is go in on a friday afternoon.
They are nearly done for the week and in a good mood.
Never ever go on a monday.

There are two issues to converting a real 2-stroke dirt bike for street use. The first is the legal hurdles regarding licensing agency requirements for both safety and emissions. Then there are those states with visible emission hurdles. You can get a license, but if you hit the street you get a ticket for visible emissions!

So, check both for your state.

I gave up trying to convert a real dirt bike, rode a KLR 650 for a while, but the suspension and weight sucks big time.

I used to ride a Penton, so likely predate you!
