Default KLR ammo cans

OK so I'll start this off. I picked up a 2007 KLR with 700 miles on it 2 months ago and love the thing. The previous owner added a Jardine pipe, taller windshield, and the highway pegs/crash bar and then never rode it. I have been commuting (splitting time with the new 2008 C14) and am planning a spring excursion somewhere yet to be determined. Picked up a couple of ammo cans last week and now I'm trying to figure out how to fashion/make/find a bracket to hold them on as panniers. Anyone have any pics of their homemade setup to share?

Just search for some saddlebag mounts either for soft bags or hard, buy what looks close to what you need, then take some donuts / beer to your favorite welder / fabricator and post pics when you're done. Start with something like this...

D_H_TX_900LTC, I used a rectangular six gallon milk crate mounted lengthwise / crosswise atop of my 08 KLR cargo rack. I used small "ball bungies" to secure the milk crate, which it's inside dimensions are 12"W x 18"L x 11"D, which effectively three .50 cal ammo cans fit perfectly into (actually a bit snug). I learned there are different depth, or height .50 cal ammo cans. The ones I use are about 7" deep, though I also saw .50 cal ammo cans that were about 10" deep. I loaded up three .50 cal ammo cans, and decided I need more stowage. I set another milk crate above the first (they nest very well together with only one good quality bungee to secure the top to the bottom, though I used several bungees, and a cable and lock to help keep the honest, honest). In the second milk crate I put two more .50 cal ammo cans, and one .30 cal ammo can. The .30 cal ammo can I could easily remove for access, and access the other two .50 cal ammo cans. The three .50 cal ammo cans were much more of a pain in the back side to access and remove, however I simply put hopefully not needed tools and supplies in them. All in all such a system worked well for me, and my 6' 220# body wearing a full Aerostich effectively perfectly shielded my cargo from wind, though I am sure I caught a lot more cross and or tail wind from my cargo load. Also made the bike a bit top heavy. Such was never a problem I noticed while riding, and I recently took a long trip, often traveling 90mph for extended periods of time, once even got up to 110mph for a brief period of time. The two crates seemed to make no difference in top end speed. Along my trip I went 100mph for an hour straight - no problem. Though once I stopped, and parked the bike a gust of wind would have blown the bike over if I had not been close enough to catch the bike while tipping over... I had 70 pounds of "cargo" including the six ammo cans and one milk crate added extra to my KLR. The "first" milk crate I have left permanently attached to my KLR since I brought it home. Makes for a convenient "catch all" to carry most anything, though is usually empty.
