KLR Pilot, what brand / model of guards are mounted on the side of your 08 KLR's pictured above? Really, I am interested to know all accessories you and or your brother have added to your KLR's? I would like to add an illuminated clock and a thermometer on either side of my instrument below the faring mounting bolt hole recesses. I would appreciate it if you would let me know what you can. Thank you.

Thanks....I am very fortunate to live in a dualsport riders heaven.
I own 17 motorbikes currently, and honestly my dualsport is my fav. This is one of my favorite pics , taken just a couple weeks after I got my new 08 KLR, to replace my old worn out 99 KLR. It still had the stock crappy tires on it then. Since I geared it down, put on good tires, and stiffened the front suspension a little, I must say I am more than just happy with it. And the range with that huge tank is very impressive to. |

Saleenguy, 17 motorcycles sounds like you might have one more than a guy really needs... : ) I have only recently worn out my rear tire, have ordered a replacement, however awaiting arrival. I fabricated a bracket to lock a throttle lock against, works quite well. I would say a must for long rides, or if you simply want your right hand free for a while. I am interested to upgrade my exhaust, and carb accordingly. I like the idea of the all stainless steel exhaust, though do not recall who sells it, or if it has a U.S.F. approved spark arrestor? Has anyone done such an upgrade yet? If so, what are your results?

And one is fine other than I need to rebuild its blown motor, thats easy, just have not got to it yet. As for the exhaust ???? you have, I hear its lighter, but does not really add much, if any power. I cut the plug off my carb and richened it up to 2.25 turns out from lightly seated....it runs way better now. What tires did you order? Do you belong to klr650.net forums....lots of good stuff on pipes etc there to. This is the plug to cut off to get to the mixture screw. I may have to post the stuff in several pics....so bear with me please. Last edited by Saleenguy : 06-13-2008 at 03:39 PM. |

cut this off, do not cut it off up high, just cut on say 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch or so.....or roughly 2 or 3 hacksaw blade thicknesses.
Its at the very front part of the carb, on the bottom. |

Saleenguy, now your number of "bikes" makes a whole lot more sense... "They say" the particular exhaust I am interested in adds six or eight horse power, and is thirteen pounds lighter. I am reasonably trusting of the thirteen pounds lighter proclamation, however question the horse power gain. But, who knows? I could care less about "sound", I am more interested in practical functionality. I would prefer a quieter bike, though such usually does not go hand in hand with horse power gains. I ordered a Bridgestone TW 42, figured it should not hurt to try it, and it looks like a reasonably good compromise tire, considering most of my riding is on pavement. Though I always want the option for some reasonably good traction should I find myself in some dirt or grass. Many people talk about "cutting / sawing" to access the pilot screw. Doesn't anyone have a drill? A nice neat little hole can be drilled that makes the screw accessible. Keep in mind, once the pilot screw is adjusted out of factory specification (away from extra lean). Technically the bike is no longer street legal... Though who would know? I would hazard a guess my pilot screw might be out of factory adjustment only half of a turn - which is not much. Though I thought my 08 KLR ran well enough for what it is / was before hand. Did notice some help, though not where I would have necessarily expected, nor does it make much sense. I only noticed benefit when traveling down the freeway, and rolling the throttle back from 70mph up to 90mph, maybe it is only coincidence? Other than that, I noticed no difference.

I cut mine off to give me more room to reach the screw, it works for me. Mine was less than 1 turn out stock....I settled on 2 1/4 turns out now. I know the exhaust saves weight, but have heard the best exhaust is maybe worth at best 2 or 3 HP. But as gutless as my KLR 650 maybe, it sure is fun. ![]() |

Saleenguy, I look at it this way, less weight effectively equates to more power. Also, regardless of how few Horse Power is gained, and gain is a gain. Granted a KLR is no crotch rocket, however still fast / powerful enough to get a person killed! In time I may experiment with a particular screw, however for now all seems fine. I have never had a problem starting my bike, however I live in a relatively temperate climate. I have road in the snow, and on ice - ice sucks! Such was only for a few days, and it was not much below freezing, however wind chill was quite noticeable...
