Need advice

I am loking to get an enduro in the near future. Most of the driving will be on the road to and from work. I plan to use this bike on light trail riding. There are several miles of logging roads near our hunting shack. The catch is that only street legal vehicals can be driven on these roads. Here are my questions. I am a new rider and plan on taking the motorcycle classes. I am average build (5'9" 185#). Would a 400 or 450 best suite me for driving on the highway or should I go with a larger one? What type of gas milage should I expect? I drive a F250 diesel and would like to find something that would be nicer on the wallet when gasing up.

I've got a thing for the KLR650 myself, sounds kind of big, but reportedly pretty easy to control on the trail for a novice. I personally wouldn't want to be out on the highway on anything smaller.
