Hey everyone! I'm new to the whole motorcycle and forum thing, so bear with me.

Lil' introduction I guess. I'm Sgt Sleepy, earned the name from the Army guys I was stationed with. I'm currently serving in the USAF as a MP, 9 years now and protecting this country one forum post at a time.
I have a lil' extra time off so I decided to buy a bike, 1978 KZ650 ($500).

The bike was whole and operational. Nice paint job, tires were shot, blows smoke like crazy, starter was FUBAR! One kick and it runs. I did the intial checks oil (black as molases), plugs (black), tire pressure (low and bald) and fuel (fresh 91 octane). Made some adjustments and off I rode. About three nice long rides into my new life experience, engine stalls out and I pull over check oil and it's gone. Nice....... Fuel gushing from carb barrel 2. Good thing it happened just a few blocks from the house.

So... A friend from the F16 maintence came over and we started tearing the bike down. Engine is out. Few broken bolts, lil easy out and some PB lubricatant should help. Wiring harness is a spliced up nightmare, new main one on the way. Tryin to salvage what I can. Carb needs rebuild, adjuster screws are stripped, floats are stickin'. I'm goin to overhaul the entire thing. I don't have a clue where to start but to clean everything and start from scratch. The frame isn't to rusty just a little from when I'm guessing the old battery exploded. Some lite sandin' and a rattle can or two should be looking good. Draw back is like I said before, I'm a military guy, so any advice on where to score some good parts at a cheap price would be much appreciated. My pop told me I can get everything from bikebandit. I have tons of photos, I'm just at work right now.

I'm the new desk officer so I'll be checking in from time to time.

Catch You All Later!

Sleepy

Motorcycle Crash Causation Study Petition

"Once every generation, we get a chance for a new Motorcycle Crash Causation Study. The last one, by Harry Hurt, was published in 1981. It made recommendations that led to always-on headlights and improvements in rider training. These were major factors in the one-third reduction in motorcycle fatalities between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s.

In October 2009, US DOT announced a new Crash Causation Study authorized by the SAFETEA-LU bill. The scope of the study has since been trimmed to only 300 crashes, far fewer than the 900 to 1200 originally required, which is what all experts agree is needed for good statistics. There are full details about this issue at BikeSafer.com Crash Study Petition Fact Page, including the official statements, stakeholders and background information.

Bikers need this new study because 5290 bikers die yearly in crashes, we don't fully understand why, and we need good crash causation information to ride safely and inform public policy. The new study has the potential to find the current causes of crashes, and identify successful riding strategies that might work for us all.

We believe that the stakeholders need to figure out a way to use our tax dollars wisely and ensure the study samples 900 to 1200 crashes, as originally required."

Please sign the petition at Bike Safer.com: Motorcycle Crash Study Petition Crash Study Petition. Bikers have a stake in this outcome, and we need to have a voice in the issue. If you could forward this to your mailing list, it would help get the word out. "This is a non-group affiliated campaign and all rider groups and individuals are invited to participate. "

Good day everyone,

I am new to this group and relatively new to my 1995 Kawasaki Bayou 400 4x4. I ran into a problem yesterday when I took my Bayou out for a drive and ended up getting fetched up on a stump. I eventually got it out with the help of my winch, but after getting unstuck I realized that I no longer had 4 wheel drive. ( the bike is always in 4 wheel drive, as there isn’t any option to take it out of) Only the back wheels were pushing. I looked it over when I got home ( I didn’t take anything apart yet) I’m not really mechanically inclined, so I didn’t want to just start removing bolts and screws. I am wondering where to start looking, to find out what is broken? Any suggestions as to how much damage I have probably done?

I live in central Illinois and I own and work on all sorts of vintage Japanese bikes. As far as Kawasakis go, I have a nice, all original '72 H1, although it needs a top-end job, a '78 KE250 enduro, and I just acquired a '74 F11. The main reason I joined is that I'm looking for a few parts for the F11. Mainly an old aftermarket exhaust. I'll post more details in the parts wanted section. Thanks.

I just got home, went out for a while, stopped at wal-mart on my way home, when I came out of walmart there were police cars surrounding a truck in the back of the truck was this nice looking 900 custom that looked a lot like mine. As I was walking to where my bike was parked I noticed my bike was not there anymore. I freaked out, went over to the cops and come to find out these guys in the truck were in the process of stealing my bike when security, who saw me pull up on my bike, saw them and called the police. Turns out just as they finished loading it in the truck the police pulled in and were able to stop them from leaving. Only damage was a crack to the reflector on the front fork which I am about to pull off anyways. So thank you mr. policeman and security lady for stopping me from losing my bike.

What's crazy is that I was only in the store for a couple minutes, went in to get some advil, so it happens that quick...scary
