Default Rear Brake Pedal Adjustment VN900 Custom

    Hi,
Can anyone give me some good instructions on adjusting the pedal please.
I got the bike last May but now the pedal isn't returning out or even quick enough to turn the rear brake light indicator off. I have to put my toe underneath it and lift up when I'm riding as it's sticking.
I've looked at the adjusment screws on the rear of the pedal but there didn't seem to be much adjustment available. I haven't touched it since new so it's probably something I should have done a while ago.

I've seen another members post where they moved the pedal down a couple of notches to enable better clearance for their foot but I'm unsure how to do this. I'll need to do this when I've sorted the above problem. If anyone has any help I'd be very grateful.

    thanks.
    Rocky

Check the brake pedal return spring, part #92145, lower left in these schematics. Lube all pivot points with spray grease. Use the red straw thingy to keep it where you want it. Report back if this doesn't solve the problem.

Yeah, it sounds like your pivot points are gooped up. It's a normal thing. Adjusting the pedal won't help this problem. I use WD40 first- it's a good cleaner too- then a little lithium spray grease using the red tube as suggested. I put an old cardbord box underneath for the next day or two to catch any drips.

This is also a Really Good Time to check/clean/lube the pivot points on your shifter linkage, etc. Make it part of annual maintenance, and you'll have fewer troubles.

    Thanks Uncle Wulf and rbentnail,

this is just the sort of pointers I needed, trying to find which and where to point and lubricate.
I'll get back to you both once done.
Had a quick check earlier and seems to be even stiffer.... I have both the lucricants mentioned so now I know which bits to get at first I'm off to do it.
    regards

All lubed now, the spring itself did look as if it was quite well gunged up so it's had a good couple of sprays and I worked the linkages a bit more... still sticking but I put another good spraying on it and all the other parts that moved and have left it to soak through, hopefully this will solve it.
I have to use it tomorrow for work so as i've been getting by with remembering to lift up the pedal after each use it wasn't ideal.
As a matter of interest which are the bolts that I undo to move the pedal down a bit more.. as my feet are at a slant on the peg because of the pedal it would be easier for me (because I'm tall) to have it a tadge lower...
Then of course it might make it worse if the lubing doesn't work so it would probably have to go back to the workshop anyway - it's 4000 mile service is due soon so I might take it in shortly.

    Thanks for the help guys..

There should be a pinch bolt on the brake lever, right next to the pivot shaft. Remove it, pull the lever off and rotate it down a few teeth.

Qs: Was the brake linkage stuff super-grimey? What shape is the spring in? Did you see any fluid leaks around the rear fluid pot? When you lift the pedal back manually, does it stay put, or will it sink down under it's own weight?... (could be a failed plunger seal?)

Also, because I am old and afraid, I wouldn't ride this thing until you fix it properly. If it drags a caliper too long you can toast the pads, rotor, and fluid. If you get in a scene where you need the wheel to roll free after lot-o-rear pedal, you won't have time to mess with the toe-lift.

    many thanks for the input.
It looks okay now without too much gunge but it doesn't fall back though with it's own weight once it's pulled out, just still sticking.
I think I'll probably get it in for it's 4000 service this week if I can and get them to sort it out properly.

    regards

    Dear All,

done nicely, the gunge was in the internal part that I couldn't see, the mechanic also took it down one notch which was perfect for my foot position. All okay now so I'll remember to do a weekly check on the moving parts so hopefully it doesn't happen again. The mech also showed me how to dismantly it correctly to do it myself if need be.

    regards all
