I used to be Sprocket but Canada went metric .remember up1 tooth in front same as down 3 in back. The old multiplyer.-Your bike does 1oo mph with a 10 tooth on front, example only, put on a eleven tooth you should get 110 mph if you don't run out of power.Try a 9 you'll never leave town , to busy rideing around looking for guys on the same bike. we used this on the motocross all the time ,on the street I stay stock Ron

Call www.scootworks.com there in the process of making new front drive pulleys for the 900 to reduce the rpms at highway speeds ,Just don't know if they've got them done yet or not.

Dennis Kirk had carried them in the past, and they also had a 19 tooth but I doubt if you could ever get it in there because of the guide fin.

on that site, you can actually go 18/37 now. any thoughts on this? that is a 2.055 ratio....

Second, I have a 2004 800a.. lots of places I have looked have sprockets for 95-03... will these fit the 04?

depends on your riding, if you get up to speed and stay above 60 at all times, then by all means go for it.

18/37 is a very suited for highway riding.

You will notice a difference in taking off.

Im at 17/38 and thats about the same as 18/40 and I noticed a difference taking off. I used to be 17/40 on the drifter.

I say the best combo is the one I went with, but i have only been a rider on 3 combos

17/42 (dads 800a)

17/40 drifter stock

17/38 drifter after change

I would love to set dads up with a 16/46 just once to see how fast these bikes will go.

My drifter quits at about 115 in 3ed, then in 4th it cant seem to pull much higher.

My dads bike has more pull in 4th up there, and thats cause its at a higher RPM.

Kenny

how big of a differance taking off? I'm almost ready to order the 38 for the rear, and then maybe go to the 18 front sooner or later... I don't mind sacrificing a bit of accel, but how bad is it?

just go with a 17/38 youll like the mpg increase - if you can deal with the crappy bottem end then throw the 18 on there

in traffic it begins to get burdensome

my first gear now limits at 40 as indicated

with 18/38 it would be higher

I am sure glad I saw this thread. I seriously suffer from 6th gear search syndrome (6gss). Gonna try the 18/40. Will the stock chain work on these. I have a 2002 Vuclan 800A

18/40 17/38 same thing basicially... i like the 17/38 cause you have smaller sprockets = shorter chain = less rotating mass

just saying...

also i have a 40 tooth sprocket here and a 17tooth if anybody wants it... let me know only have a few thousand on them - they are stock ones so they are steel

Smile 18 front stock rear

I could not get the front sprocket off with a normal socket so took it to the dealer and had them change it. (impacts are great) By far the biggest change is vibration at hiway speed (65 to 75mph). A wonderful improvement! Slightly better gas mileage and slightly less acceleration, but thats why they give us all those other gears! Next to my mustang seat this is the most important change I have made.

Folks I have made the switch to a 17/ 38 setup. I am getting better gas mileage, and the annoying buzz at 60 seems to have disappated.

But the best is the loss of the constant search for the phantom 6th.
Thanks for alll the great info

I did the swap to both my bike and my wifes bike. She has done nothing but complain about it, says her bike runs like crap now, cannot idle slow enough in 1st to roll in traffic, etc. I actually thought something may be wrong with her bike so I looked it over carefully, rode it, listened to it and thought she was just imagining things. I changed the front sprocket back to a 16 and left the 38 in place. She now thinks I have once again magically fixed her bike, it runs smoother, gas mileage did change more than +1mpg. Mine will also go back to stock gearing as soon as I can afford it.Flat ground it pulls OK, mountains of southern Ky, and Northern Tennessee it was terrible, 5th gear was only a memory most of the day last Monday.

I run the 17/38 with no trouble. Bob, you may need to open your 800s up a little to get the benefit of the change in gearing. The hypercharger and exhaust really gave my 800 some additional spunk.

On what terrain though? On long steep hills they just run out of ability, will usually hold speed but usually at wide open throttle. Fuel mileage has dropped with this gear change too, which should tell us the engine is working a lot harder.Temperature is up a bunch too. She has been riding her 95a since 96 and never once been burnt by the case beside the shifter, until this trip.Mine too was considerably hotter.
Last trip across the Cherohyla Skyway I never changed gears once, all the way across. This time i was constantly going from too slow 4th to too tall 5th, back and forth. Hers was worse than that even, it is totally stock exhaust and jetting, which never was an issue before. Mine has Sportster mufflers and been rejetted, with the cutaway airbox, and it is borderline too loud for my taste, especially on the intake. My fuel mileage also fell this last trip out, it was doing a respecable 52/54mpg, it fell to 48 at best. In all, for riding the mountains and hilly country here in Ky, Tennn, and North Carolina it just is not a good move without rendering the bike less predictable and dropping fuel mileage.
