Both rear axles fit into a splined assembly on both sides of the transaxle that has a universal joint. That component is called the inside drive shaft assembly and it plugs into the differential on the transaxle, and is locked into place with a snap ring inside the differential carrier itself.
The outside shaft assembly can develop a build up of rust on the inside of the spline and will not pull out of the splined coupling on the inside drive shaft assembly.
Sometimes you can use a good penetrating oil and let it set overnight, or keep oiling and let it set for several days, and work the spline loose with a pair of hammers by tapping both sides of the thing until the rust works loose enough to allow the unit to pull apart.
Worst case is that you need to remove the transaxle and open the case and pull the differential carrier apart and pop the snap ring then take everything out and use a press to get the spline apart.
The universal joint on the inside axle assembly is a glued unit that can be broken down with a universal joint press and allow removal of the splined coupling with the outside axle, and then the stuck coupling will pull with the outside axle and can be pressed off with a press and the U-joint reassembled.
If that option is used, you will need to scare up a universal joint lock kit similar to what OEM's use to relock the OEM joint when you reassemble the axle or obtain an aftermarket U-joint with the locking rings and replace the entire U-joint. Kawasaki sells the universal joint only as a complete assembly with the inside axle.
If you take a look at the parts diagrams on Kawasaki.com you will see how the parts relate and the location of the inside lock rings.
If toys will get me in the door when it is time to go, I have it made!
thank you for that info i am spliting the case to go after a back rattle so i will just go that route.
