I have a 3010 Kawasaki Mule Gas. I am having a problem with getting it running. It will only crank and run if I hold out the choke (but runs a little sluggish). The minute I let the choke go it goes dead. I have checked the fuel pump and it is pumping, plugs look good. Checked the intake filter and it looks good as well.Just happened all of the sudden. This happened one time before and I took it to the dealer. All they would tell me about what they done to fix it was gaskets and seals. Is there anything else I can check or look at. It has about 100 hours on engine. Thanks in advance for your help.

Generally, the symptoms you describe are either a situation of improperly adjusted valves, a dirty carburetor, a carburetor that is loose from the intake, or the intake between the carburetor and the engine is loose from the engine.
I would adjust the valves, then totally disassemble and clean the carburetor. I am not sure what the dealer did to correct such a problem as this before, but the only seals that would cause this are between the carburetor and the engine, and very simple to identify and correct. I strongly recommend that Mule owners purchase the Service Manual, as it has a very good help section that can walk you through the many items to check and the routine adjustments that are necessary to keep it running well.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate your help. I have looked on line for a service manual and have seen some downloadable versions that are a little less expensive. Have you had any experience with the PDF versions of the service manual? Once again many thanks.

If you look up the manual discussions on here, you will find the results mixed regarding the PDF versions.
I have used both, and by far prefer the real deal. It is not so much because the PDF manuals are not that good, but more from the standpoint that there are things you run into that the manuals are not that clear about or you find additional information and it is important to be able to write notes for future reference. Also, if I print from my PC printers the ink is not that durable when using the PDF files around any liquids. It is a real pain to have the photo and instructions running off the page because you have moisture on your hands! Since the Mules tend to outlast several owners, or are used forever on farms and ranches, having the real deal manual with your service notes is pretty helpful.

to the OP...
on the 3010, it uses a dual throat carb with a single bowl. They also have idle mixture adjustments on the top, but they're plugged with brass plugs. First thing I'd do is pull the carb off and clean EVERYTHING. Not just one jet or spray some cleaner up inside of it, pull it apart completely (all jets) and clean every single part. Afterwards look through each jet-you should be able to see through each one of them. Also make sure the nozzles are clean-I normally just use the tube of the carb cleaner can and spray it down the air bleed jets in the throat of the carb. This gets 99% of the junk out. Reinstall it and see if it idles ok. If not, chances are you'll have to drill off the plugs and adjust the air/fuel mixture. Next question on the 650 Prairie. Is the engine limited to where it will only go about 7 mph in high range? Sounds like the belt failure switch has been tripped. When it's tripped the CDI limits engine speed but cutting the spark intermittently, which makes it backfire. |
