Default flashing between 4wd to 2wd

my 2002 prairie 650 is flashing in and out of 4wd to 2wd on instrument cluster. Is it the switch or the the thing in the front end that puts it in and out 4wd on the front end

Depends. It can be that the belt is in need of service, or the front servo motor is frozen up which is pretty common after a couple of years.

I thought that I had a front 4 wd. problem when the light flashed on my Prairie. Turns out that it wasn't slipping out of 4 wd. but the brake actuator was glitching and I'd lose engine braking when that was happening.

When the light begins to flash, switch to 4 wd. and when you've slowed down and are on a quiet part of the ride, switch out of 4 wd. If you hear it click out, the problem isn't with the 4 wd. actuator but with the engine brake actuator. I was worried that my 4 wd. wasn't working when the light started to flash and thank God that wasn't the case.

Best regards,

Pat

I agree with the previous post that you need to check the functioning of the four wheel drive actuator to narrow the hunt. The limp switch is triggered by the belt actuator, so I would be inquisitive of what the previous owner disabled and guess you have a problem with the belt actuator that manages compression braking.
