Hi Cornfarmer - being a fellow kiwi I just had to nip out to the w/shop and get the manual for you.

The 3 yellow wires are indeed the alternator stator wires, come out of the left crankcase and to a connector. On 1988-94 220 models there are 2 wires. On 1995 and later 220 and 250 models and all 300 models there are 3.
Hope this helps!

Yeah all 3 wires are in the same heat shrink, I tested them with an ohmmeter and they've all connected to each other (continuity) on the crankcase side of the connector but on the top side they're not connected.
Thanks for your help.

2. On all 300 models, connect an ohmmeter between each of the terminals in the side of the connector that runs back to the engine (connect the positive lead to one of the terminals and the negative lead to each of the two remaining terminals in turn).

If the readings are outside of this list:

300 models:

1986 and 87: .2 to .8 ohms
88 - 99: .1 to.7 ohms
2000 on: .33 to .49 ohms

...replace the stator.

3. Connect the ohmmeter between a good ground on the vehicle and each of the connector terminals in turn. The meter should indicate infinite resistance. If not replace.

Hope this helps, are you having charging problems?
