Hey all!
Dave here. New to this forum, so be kind! Having just sold an EZGO 2-cycle golf cart, I'm in the market for a used Mule. Looking forward to the power, torque, and dependability of a twin V! Problem is, with all the model numbers throughout the years, I'm having trouble sifting through which are single versus twins, displacment size, etc. Can anyone direct me to a table showing model #'s, CC's, single versus twins? Any help greatly appreciated! |

The Mules with the four digit model number starting with 2500 are the current series of twins.
The first twin was the 1000 series, and it was a modified motorcycle engine with 450 cc. This is more of a collectors item today, and was the most flexible performer of all the twins. This particular model is becoming fairly difficult to obtain replacement transmission parts, but Kawasaki 450 and 650 twin motorcycle parts can be modified to fit. The 2010, 2020, and 2030 which are a 540 cc single. Good engine, and the parts are all still available either through Kawasaki or John Deere. I do not think I have ever seen one of these actually wear out unless someone forgot to change the oil for several years. All the twins from 25XX through the 41XX are the 617 cc Kawasaki twin engine. Not all 617 cc engines are created equal. You want to look for one in a 31XX or newer to get the engine with the latest crankshaft bearings and supports. The earlier engines are good engines, but if maintenance has been lax you could end up needing to replace the engine as the main bearings are no longer available as replacements. Sometimes you can find them NOS through John Deere dealers, as they have used the same engine for years. All the 617 cc engines are known as 620's, and are highly dependent on keeping the valves adjusted and the oil changed for long life. Properly cared for they run just about forever. The three digit model numbers are single cylinder engines. The 500 series Mules were 300 cc singles, the 600 series are 400 cc singles. I particularly like the 610 series, as it is economical and sized for ease of use. The diesel series extends back to the 25XX and runs through the 41XX models, and that is a 950 cc triple. If you take care of it, the diesel will outlast several owners. If you do not take care of it or use bad fuels and gasoline engine lubricants it will cost a fortune to fix.
