Default 2006 Prairie 4x4 governor prob?

I just purchased a used 2006 prairie 4x4 and it only goes about 20 mph in high. Then it is as if the ingition goes on, off, on, off, on, off, on, off at about consistent 2 second intervals. It has a new belt and runs great up to 20 mph but will not go any faster. I can open the throttle in neutral and it will do the same thing. What is the cause of this problem and the fix please?

Try using the choke when it does that and if it helps the running it is starving for fuel.

Thank you john for the good idea. I tried it but it works no better with choke applied, whether a little or a lot of choke is applied. I have held all along that it has to do with some governor and that it is cutting off spark. I have ordered a manual on cd.

Bill

Probably a rev limiter sensor problem then, but I don't know where it would be on you unit.

hello..... hows the battery ? is it new and or in good shape? a weak battery can cause this sort of issue.due to lack of voltage.have your battery tested and replace it if needed .or put a good charge on it.

also may want to check the fuel supply or carb/floats/air fuel mix it may be running to lean at top end and (surging).does it make a diff if you pump the throotle qiuckly while ridein ? have you checked the air filter also?

pull a plug and look at it and read it for how it may be running.if you can post a pic of this it may help alot on helping you out -corey-

The Batt Measured About 12.54 Volts Before And After I Charged It. It Does Act Like It Is Starving For Fuel Above X Rpm And I Guess That Would Be About 3-4,000 Rpm. Does 12.54 Volts Sound Adequate?

yea but what is under a load.take and start your machine and turn on the lights and watch if the vlots drop down below 12.with it runnin it should be around 13 +

you could have a dirty carb or bad set up on the float or air/fuel mix or fuel is not gettin to the fuel bowl fast enough to keep the air fuel right.may have a dirty fuel filter in the tank at the petcok,or a dirty or blocked up petcok.

something to check out there.also hows that plug look?-corey- oh yea the rev limit should be around 6-7 i would think if it has a limiter.my ole bayou does not have a limiter itll keep screamin untill it blows up.if you have a manual make sure your machine has this limiter built in to the cdi but i think its just starving for fuel @top end

voltage at the battery while idling with the lights on full is 14.2. I am heading in the direction of a fuel delivery problem and will investigate from the tank to the carb.

i know on my bike 2003 P360 4x4 if the check belt light is blinking it will limit the rpm's

can you get your RPM's up in neutral?

there is a method to clear the belt codes... maybe you should do that... it requiired swapping two cables on mine then turning the key on for 10 seconds or somethign then putting it back

i forget but the floor manual can tell you.

is your machine a 360?

Kenny, yes it is a 360. the mechanic swaped those two elec connectors you mentioned and reset the 100 hour counter. the rpm's do no better in nuetral. However, it runs better when I first start it. 5 mins later things get worse, misses so much it hasn't got much power. Does this help?

Your battery is at 50% when at 12.5+ volts, so if the new battery is still running that low it is bad. They should be at 12.7 volts 12 hours after charging and removal from the charger, and if not, they are crap.

On your ATV there is a dual screen pickup in the bottom of the fuel tank. You drain the fuel, and remove the valve to get it out. Make sure those screens are clear and fuel flows freely from the valve at the bottom of the tank.

I would suspect the carburetor is in need of service from your initial description, but would not charge down that road until you did a complete electrical system check to find out why your battery is half dead.

You may have an igniter problem but likely also have a control unit failure. Have both checked.

thanks rcw, sounds like good direction to me. I will do the tank screens and a new battery. While running with the lights on the batt voltage was 14+ so I think it is simply a tired original battery from 2006. If it still runs bad, I shall head to the dealer to have the igniter and control unit checked. I really appreciate your expertise.

I have seen some crappy multimeters be off by .2V @ 12V

lead acid batteries are 12.6V @ full charge

saying a battery is half dead at 12.5V is incorrect.

regardless... as long as you have enough "battery" there to electric start the engine then we can call it good.... once the engine is running the alternator will keep up, the battery is just used as a large capacitor at that point

How about if you put your fuel **** to reserve? how about if you let the carb bown fill up, then start it and rev it... does it kick out then? Maybe the float level is set too low, maybe the main jet is clogged

how is your air filter? Is the inside of your exhaust BLACK Does it pop and back fire (too lean)

double check to make sure those connectors are put back together tightly
