I bought a cheap 86 bayou 300 for $300, it did not start or run. I cleaned the carb, air filter, changed the oil, replaced the spark plug and new battery and it starts and runs. I was riding for about 30 minutes, and it bogged down and stalled. It wouldn't start again without choke, and would stall when I gave it throttle. I sprayed some carb cleaner in there and it ran again, I got back to my house and it is doing the same thing again.
The gas tank has been kreemed a long time ago, since its kind of bubbly and i can see the metal tank again, I think part of it is getting clogged in the carb, or maybe some rust, there is rust on the top of the tank. But, I put an inline fuel filter on, wouldnt that stop the crap from getting to the carb? Also, occasionally when the engine is not running and the fuel valve is open, gas leaks out the very bottom of the bowl out of the little nub. I thought the overflow was up top? what is this on the bottom? Does anyone know where I can get a different carb tat would work for the bayou 300? I hate this vaccuum carb crap. Does one from a different kind of quad work? Also, will the gas tank off of a newer model fit my 86? I found some on ebay for cheap but the quads are year 2000 +, but no rust.

If you have gas leaking out of the bottom of the carb the float is probably has some junk in it holding it open. A carb cleaning will fix this. There is a thread on here where someone took a Honda ATV carb and made it fit the bayou. They were successful but I can't recall the thread title. |

for the fuel leakin out the bottom of the carb .this is the float needle not shutin all the way and over fillin the bowl .when you open the fuel bowl you will see a tube connected to it,this is where the gas drains out for that tube is a breather in side the carb.if you do not have a hose on the float bowl where that stub is id put on on it and run down on the engine perferbly the back side of the engine behind the trans.
i have fixed my tank on my 86 and no problems still! i do have a post step by step on how to do this it is in a older post though.i love these carbs but they are a pain sometimes i wish they had mikuni carbs for they have replaceable float seats. i bought my quad 3 -4 yr ago for 100 $ rebuilt the top end totally and did some other workins and i tell you what these monsters are unbeatable for pullin and just gettin down in the mud.so much low end power its not funny.i still have all the original electrics except for the battery which i change every year.normal services on oil change and rear diff fluids and lubein up the suspension when i ride in the mud.not a lick of problems . hope you find that gas tank repair post i can re post it if you cannot find it.good luck on the repairs and have fun with that beast -corey-oh yea one more thing when you clean the carb let it soak in a good cleaner over nite or for 2 days it will give you better results, and repalce that float needle . Alright, so for the gas tank, it has been kreemed in the past but it is starting to flake off. If i buy another kreem kit can I just recoat it? will the 3 step process work? or do I need something else?
For the carb... I usually take it apart and take the jets out and the float and just spray all the holes with carb cleaner. What is this soaking method? All carb cleaner I have seen comes in a spray bottle. What is your method of "soaking" or cleaning the carb? and what parts can not get soaked? Also, what are the ideal settings for the tuning screws?

soakin the carb..... you can use sea foam or chem dip.chem dip is sold by gallon cans.you take all the rubber parts off the carb and the jets basically just the butterfly is left in.ten you put the carb body in the dip and let it set over nite or 2 days.
what itll do is take and eat up all the crap in the pilot circuits etc.so when you use compressed air itll make it brand new lookin i9nside all them little holes you cant see . as for the kreem i have never used the stuff i use what i have layin around and i so happened to have fibre glass resin and hardner for a boat repair we done.and i noticed the boat had a fiberglass tank so thats when it hit me to use resin and hardner in my tank after i cleaned it with denatured alcohol and bee bees (the pointed style).and then used water to rinse the tank cause when i cleaned it it opened up pin holes in the seam.i left water in the tank and connected my tank to my exhuast on my truck and weled the holes back up with a brazin rod.took the water out used denatured alcohol agin to dry my tank and then used the resin to coat the inside of my tank.to seal the metal from rusting again.like i said its been 3-4 yr now and no problems. i guess you can use the kreem but you have to make sure the tank is prepared correctly for best results.it all in the prep work my friend how long its goin to last. good luck on the repairs.-corey-ioh by the way i to now have a mojave it needs a total top end redo i will be posting pick up soon of the rebuild.i am makin it into a 280cc hopein to out run my buds 350 warrior and a 300 ex modified.i am goin to have cycleworksracin.net modifie the cams for more lift and a 11.5-1 compression piston.ohh its goin to be sweet revenge when i blow past em and kick mud in there face.lol as they did when i was one the bayou 300.but when they got stuck they cried for me to un stick em lol |

I know seafoam, I use it in my vehicles, but its VERY expensive. The chem dip, is that literally what its called? Can I pick it up at an autozone or napa?
Ill try this method. And what do you guys like using for in line fuel filters? the small round ones that I think inside have a metal screen, or the bigger clear ones with a paper filter? And what do you tune your air/fuel mixture screw to? Also, I had a mojave for a couple years, I loved it! I bought the 36mm mikuni carb from cycleworksracing.net, AWESOME carb! made a huge difference in power...that plus the cobra pipe plus jet kit + k&n = Awesome mojave!

yea napa may have it or something very close to the same thing.
on my bayou it likes it at 1.5 to 2 turns out from seat.but mine had jet kit in it and polsihed intake runner etc.you start off at 1.5 out and go form there.its all about the sea level etc and how your machines compression is.you will have to modifiy a small screw driver to fit under the carb it is a tight fit but it can be done while on the machine and running.i took and sodiered the screw driver right to the screw just enough to reach in and adjust on the fly if i needed.but be carefull not to heat that screw to much cool with water as soon as your done.-corey- i like the glass filters that you can change the element on the spot.
