Default Idles Good, Stammers at High Speed

I just rebuilt the carb on m Bayou 220. It idles pretty good, but seems to have a "dead spot" about 1/4 throttle where it just dies. If you get it through this spot, it will rev up, but will also stutter and stammer.

It also seems to "stammer" or miss a little at higher speed under load (moving).

Air jet is out 2 turns. Idle screw just barely raises the needle guide. Needle retainer is in the center notch. No air leak on boot.

Thanks for all you help.

The quarter throttle dead spot is your pilot circuit. Put the rig in neutral and set the idle up to around 1,200 rpm, then adjust the pilot air screw unit the idle exhaust note sounds real good, then back the idle back down to where it belongs and I would bet that dead spot is gone.

If the exhaust note does not change when doing this, then you have a partially plugged pilot circuit and may be able to get away with using SeaFoam in a tank of fuel - see below.

The high speed miss is likely a dirty main jet or plugged air bleed on the main jet tube. Since it is running, put a dose of SeaFoam in the fuel and run a tank. It will likely straighten itself out.

If it does not correct the problem it may be necessary to disassemble the carburetor and clean it thoroughly.

I bought a dip kit and I'm going home tonite to assemble it again.

On part 16017 of the fiche on this carb, can you tell me the correct orientation? It is the main needle guide bushing that just drops into the hole. It will go in both ways, but one end has a recess (counter bore) and the other does not.

Also, how important is 11012 (plastic cap)? Mine doesn't have this and didn't come with the kit.

Thanks!
