Default Need troubleshooting help

Hi
Working on a 1983 KLT 250 Prairie I am not getting any power to the plug. I am getting power to and through the coil. I suspect it must be in the ignition but am not sure how to check. I replaced the black box with a used one out of the junkyard but could have got a broken one. How do I check the box with ohm meter? Am I supposed to have power to the ignition pick-up and how much. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You really need a manual that shows you which pins to test and in what order, or to take the electronic units to a Kawasaki dealer or independent motorcycle shop and have them tested.

Myself, I would pull the coil, igniter, regulator, and the pulsing coil and take them all to a shop and have them properly tested if I did not have the service manual and the proper digital multimeter to do the job.

When you say you are getting power to the coil, that is a difficult thing to ascertain without a very sensitive digital volt meter that does not inject any current into the circuit. If you intercept the coil feed with a conventional volt meter to test the voltage pulse you run the risk of blowing your igniter.

I do not recommend swapping parts on the electronic ignitions. Should you swap in a used part for a good one, and the used part is defunct, you can blow other components in the process. It is just too expensive to randomly swap in new parts looking for the problem, and if you have a problem with too high an output from the voltage regulator you can fry a new igniter. The entire thing can cascade into a cat chasing its tail as new parts are ruined by bad parts.

Also, the battery condition is critical on these. A weak battery can lead to excessive regulator voltage to the igniter and burn it out in a eye blink.
