Default 1988 300 bayou starting problems

Ok ... I have had this quad for about a year and it runs like a champ. It gets started atleast once a week and ran for a little while anyways. Well today I started it up and ran it for about 3 min and then turned it off and then about 30 min later fired it back up and ran it for 2 or 3 more min and then turned it off. About an hour later I fired it back up and it would not start . Ran on and ran on then backfired . Tried it again and it ran on and ran on and then back fired again . Buy that time the battery was getting low so i yanked it and threw it on a slow charge and then went and ran some errands . Got back tonight and put the battery back in and tried it again and got the same thing - run on and then back fire . Then just run on and then thats it . Whats strange is that it has shown no sign of running bad and then this . It has been getting colder so maybe thats it ? Who knows . Any insight would be great !

hello .have you checked the compression yet? spark?and how long has it been since a valve adjustment has been made? pull the plug check for a blue spark.then put your finger over the plug hole and see if itll pop your finger out of the hole.(that a quick compression test).and if no on the valves may want to check them.

Have not checked compression but like I said it has run perfect . As far as spark it back fired so that would mean combustion . I plan on pulling the plug tomorrow in the daylight and cleaning it off and checking things out. I was just curious if any of the other bayou owners have ever come across this - run perfect consistently and then wont start and back firing .

Could be some crappy gas gumming up the carb.. Wouldn't hurt to take the carb off and give it a good cleaning if you haven't done it in awhile. Doesn't take much to plug those little jets.

mine did this and it was due to the valve adjusting screw nut backed off and loseend the adjustin screw.but like tj said it doesnt take much to plug up these carbs ,it may be best to start there and work out from there.

I took out the plug and cleaned it up and tried to start it and nothing . Took the plug and held it next to the motor and cranked it and it sparked . Put in some dry gas and topped it off with fresh gas . Cleaned the plug and squirted a bit of fresh gas in the hole and put the plug back in and it fired up. It ran with a miss but kept it running and ran better till it ran like a champ again . I ran it for a good hour and then turned it off and waited 1/2 hour and it fired right back up . Got back in tonight about 7 hours after it last ran and fired it right up . All is good

bad fuel then i take it hmmm.

makes me wonder when you put fuel in the cylinder it didnt bump the compression back up. a stickin ring due to carbon can cause lak of compression untill you get it to run then it clears it out. and the rings reseal. may want o get sum seafoam and add it to the tank just to be safe.

glad to hear you got her back up and runnin be safe -corey-

Well it happened again . All day yesterday I ran it hauling wood and all kinds of stuff - start and stop multiple times with no problems . Went out this morning and tried to start it up and the same thing happened . The engine just runs on and then it back fires . I got my hopes up that it was just the gas . So should I pull the plug and see if I can get it going then if I do add seafoam to the gas ? I cant mess with it right now football is on . "mine did this and it was due to the valve adjusting screw nut backed off and loseend the adjustin screw " Really ? Where is that located ... Ill try that
