Default 3010 geabox cracked at bolt by starter area

Hey fellas, I just got my first utv and it has a crack, good size, on the geabox facing the motor, at the area by the starter. The bolt housing almost touches the starter. No bent frame, nothing broke, all bolts in tact, bracket between engine and motor intact. Any Ideas? Just bought it Friday and have it down to the engine clutch, will order tool to remove that on monday. Any of you guys been into these gearboxes? Also need to order a good manual, your advice? Thanks

Boy, i gotta get off this site, I may have wasted $1800.00 on this 3000 hour machine that leaks oil. Runs good, but I see so much trouble with these things. Whew! Tim

If you can get it apart without too much greif have it TiG welded. If done properly by a highly skilled welder it can be smoothed down to near be invisible. No. I'm not that good any more, I can't see well enough, it takes young eyes to be able to doit

Thanks for the reply mrich. It is broken in the bolt hole and is a good break. The cover is 128.00, so will take it apart when i get the puller for the clutch. Also will get a manual from the sponsor of this site as well as parts. Curios how I will get the gearbox out of the frame, will have to get a u-joint press too, I think. Tim

This is the time of year I hunt, so will not be checking in very often until after the first of the new year.

You are on the right track. Once you have the service manual in your hands it will walk you through the process.

Normally the case does not break unless it was forced in gear while on the move, so check your dog clutches once it is opened up so you can inspect the components. As you are finding out, the parts are quite inexpensive, it is just time consuming to pull the gear case out and get it on the bench so you can work on the thing.

Thanks rcw, i suspect they may have broke a chain and jammed the case. Nothing in the oil when drained. Waiting for the puller to get the clutch off. Took your advise and opened the bleeder when I pulled the drums and checked the linings. I used a cheap harbor freight slide hammer axle puller and made some 2x2x2" long tubing spacers with a 5/8 hole drilled all the way through and they came right off with some pb blaster. Thanks so much for you input, you know these mules. At 3000 hrs, it sure runs good. Will change all the fluids and filters and new plugs and valve adjustment. Never even rode one of these, looks like it may be a good unit to have. Not all tore up other than trying to move a dropbox on blacktop(found out today). The weakest link surrendered. Thanks again, rcw. Tim

Update. Well, I finally got the clutch puller and took the transmission out and apart. The crossshaft in the spider gears broke in 3 places and a piece made a hole in the left case. All other parts in there look brand new!! Ordered parts and gaskets and service manual and will assemble in a week. Thanks for the help fellas. Tim

Update----- Back together and runs real good. Took the advice of rcw and stayed with new stock tires. Cleaned the gearcase with brake clean and prelubed for assembly. Then ran 2 fills of atf and one fill of hydraulic fluid to flush all the silver out of everything. Ran each refill for 2 minutes. The hyd fluid was clear when drained. Good to go with 90 wt. With 2 tires and parts, about $450.00 and a good machine. I will admit, it was a bit of a chore. Tim
