I borrowed my friends 2007 Kawasaki 750 Quad. It has been sitting in my yard for 18 months. The starter started to make noices when trying to start it, then it did not work. The starter was receiving 12.4 volts. I was able to start it with the pull starter. It was running for about 2 minutes with me just cracking the throttle. Then it just stopped. It did not just slow down to a stall, it stopped. No noices just stopped. Have you ever heard of something like this happening? The quad has 109 miles on it. It was riding fine up to this point. I am unable to pull the cord to start it. It is locked up also. Seems strange, oil level is good, oil does not smell and it just stopped running for this having only 109 miles on it. Also never abused, never saw mud. This does not sound good to me
Thanks in advance, Rob |

I would approach the problem in steps, and take your time over several days to rule out each area so you do not panic and start throwing money at ghosts.
First, check the battery and make sure your connections and grounds are good. If the battery is a flooded acid type make sure it is filled to the full mark with distilled water, then charge it over night on one amp or less. If it is the gel type, get the correct charger (just any charger will trash them in short order) and charge it over night. After the battery is charged, unhook it and let it set 12 hours. Test the voltage and make sure it is at least 12.7 volts, lower than that after 12 hours of setting means it is junk. Once the battery is good, then reconnect it and remove your spark plugs. Leave them connected to the spark plug wires and grounded to the engine away from the spark plug holes. Spin the engine over and look for liquid blowing out of the cylinders. I would guess your carburetors are full of junk and drooling gasoline into the engine. The above will test that assumption. If that is the case you will need to disassemble the carbs and clean them thoroughly. Just spraying cleaner through them is a waste of time, so follow the repair manual procedure for disassembly, cleaning and inspection. The gasoline we have now days goes bad in a matter of weeks, leaving it in one for six months is a kiss of death to the carburetors.

Thanks for the help. I will post an update as I go along here. Stinks that I had this in my trailer for a 13 hour drive for it to not work. The extra weigth of this quad had me burn extra fuel. Just when you think you are doing something to help yourself, you spend more time working on it then racing. |
