Default mule 550 shifting problem

I just bought a 550 mule (2004) and when I put it in gear it seems to grind more then it should. Should it be a smooth shift does the idle have anything to do with it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Old Bill

To High of an idle speed will cause it to grind, and to low will cause a jerk when you throttle up. Just adjust your idle speed down to where your grinding is to a minimum. Check your manuel for idle adjustment. Hope this helps.

Default Smooth or not

My mule runs smooth, you might have a slight carb problem, may be why idle was set high. If all else fails you can start your mule in gear by applying the brake and eliminate grinding since it's in gear already.

John, Ok The guy I bought the mule from said he had some gas problems so he put in a new fuel pump and cleaned out the gas tank. I'm thinking the carb may have to be taken apart and cleaned. Thank you for your help. Bill
