I bought the prairie 650 a month ago, he said it has been sitting for 18 months and was running when he parked it. I cleaned the tank out and rebuilt the carbs. Still wont start. Checked to see if it was firing and it is. Compression "feels" good. Are they a sensor or pick up that tells it when to fire? Anybody have any ideas. Thanks, Mike

hello ... is the fuel gettin to the carbs?
and have to tried startin fluid to start it yet? does the machine have a new plug(S) in it? but if its been settin for 18 mths then id be bettin the rings are stuck or even a valve, get a compression gauge and test it.it may feel ok but feelin and havein a psi readin is to different worlds.25 psi can pop your finger out of the hole.when it needs 110+ psi to compress the fuel vapors to make a boom. but it may have done sum damage to cylnder wall if the rings have frozen and then moved.it may have scored the walls. get a comp tester asap and test that first.post back your finding we wil go from there-corey- |

it is getting fuel, i tried starting fluid, replaced the plugs twice. i will get me a adaptor for my compression gauge so i can check it. the ecu looks like it has got hot before on the bottom side. On the silicone, one side is smooth and the other is ruff but the plugs are firing.the arc is jumping around on the electrode.
i did put marvels mystery oil in the cylinders and let it sit for two days thanks alot corey mike melton |

keep us posted when you get the adapter for you gauge.
the other thing you may want to look at is the valves.make sure thay are opening and closeing.timin chain may have jumped or broke. remove the cam covers and inspect ,the cam lubes.chain ,and for movement of the valves. |

i checked compression today on both cylinders, 90lbs. blowed coolant ever where. started taring down , found bad cam "exhaust lobe". on rear head. as soon as i get front head off i'll take them to machine shop to get them checked and have a valve job done. cylinder looked fine

ahhh the blown head gasket huh? coolant comein out the plug hole is a good indication of that or a warped head or a cracked water journal,or a bad gasket.have the machine shop ckeck that head really good for carcks and warpage.if you have the motor torn that far down might as well have the jug honed and replace the rings.(just to be safe) its better to do it now and save sum money and down time in the long run.
givin the age of the machine its best to rebuild the whole top end now. as for the cam are there metal shaveings in the motor for the cam wearing out? that may have happened if water mixed with the oil? water is not a good lubricante. but you may want to flush your oil pan out with some chaep oil to rinse out any flakes.change the filter. good luck on the rebuild keep us posted -corey- |
