Default KEBS/KAP 400 Prairie

Hi,
I'm on the Cruiser forum with a 2007 900 Vulcan Custom.
My question is, a friend is trying to get me to buy a 4 wheeler he has. I gradually looked at it. It read KEBS or KAPS 400 prairie and its a automatic and 4 wheel drive, camouflage seat, etc.
I thought this thing might have been Chinese or something, but when I was google didn't find much other than it might be a Kawasaki, but didn't see kawasaki anywhere on it.
does anyone have any information on this ATV and what is KEBS/KAPS? He's had work done to it, new brakes, etc. but will need a new battery, fuel cutoff valve, etc.
ot even sure what year it is, can't find to much info and not sure what to search on in the archives if this is a Kaw.

thanks
ron

If it says KAPS on the side it's a '97-'98 Prairie. KAPS stands for "Kawasaki Automatic Power System". The '99--01 said "automatic 400" on it. if it says KEBS on it it could be a 650 twin or a 360 because it stands for "Kawasaki Electronic Braking System"

There are a few issues to look out for. The engines are strong as long as they are taken care of. If they weren't taken care of, they are expensive to repair. The clutch/drive train is a weak link. They wear out pretty bad and are fairly expensive to replace/rebuild. The rear rims are 10" so difficult to find replacement tires for anything in an aggressive tread. The front springs sag out pretty bad even without any extra weight like a plow or anything so if you plan on carrying anything up there you can opt for the Kaw heavy duty springs but they are expensive (about $170 per side)

Thanks, so it actually could had said KEBS? Couldn't find much info that compared to KAPS, so thought I made a mistake. I know it did say automatic on it and did not have a rack but some type of roll on the front. As to the size I thought it said 400 or 450, but from what I read don't see a 450.
I have to take another look at it.
thanks for the advice, only reason for buying one is so I could put a plow, aerator, etc on it.
Also the pull start does not work, the rope pulls out but doesn't turn anything over.
thanks
ron

I'm sorry, I misquoted. The later Kawasaki belt drive quads use KEBC or "Kawasaki Engine Brake Control"

They apply pressure to the outside of the primary clutch during downhill off-throttle rides putting the "transmission" in "low gear" to slow the quad down.

If it said KEBC on the side it's a later model, and not a 400

If it said KAPS on the side, it's a '97-'98 KVF400 (Prairie 400) The '99-'01 just said automatic 400 on the belt cover.
