Possessed 1992 Bayou 350

I bought a 1992 Bayou 350 and have been using it to run dogs. Bear with me for the story.

Once I got a fresh battery it ran OK. After transport, it was low on power for 2 or 3 miles, but then would run strong. That pattern stayed the same. The starter would generally always work. The last time I took it out, it started at home but by the time I got to the dog track, the starter was not working. I attempted to pull start and got one backfire then obviously had no spark. The starter then started working and it would just turn over and over. You could tell it was getting fuel, just not spark.

Ideas to troubleshoot? Cheap places to look for parts?

I paid $600 for this machine and it is great for what I want. I am just hoping for a very cheap fix to keep training the dogs.
