03 KFX400 ticking/knocking sound from...?valvetrain?

Hi all, Newbie here. I have an 03 KFX400 that just started making a ticking or knocking sound when running. It does it cold/hot, idle/WOT. I adjusted the valves to within the factory ranges according to the service manual and still have the sound. I have no idea where it is coming from and don't really want to pay a dealer to fix it. Anyone have any ideas?

I've heard that the automatic tensioner on the timing chain can give trouble on those models. When it goes, the engine sounds like a diesel while running.

Does it have a gear-driven starter clutch bolted to the flywheel?? If those bolts work loose and allow the clutch to start moving around...Sounds like piston slap when it happens on a 220 Bayou...
