I bought an '89 Bayou 300 4X4 with blade last year. It runs fine, but sometimes it just refuses to start. Cranks and cranks, but never fires. Go away for a few hours, and it may start right up the next time. What's up with that?

I got my bayou for basically free, we had to get the tranny worked on and it ran good up until now that it fouls plugs all the time.
Has anyone ran their's with no front fenders/ or modded ones. I think it looks cool after tearing it down, but I wanted to see some pics and maybe see if theres any way to prevent mud from going everywhere? |

First post here. Thanks to all that I hope will help me out.I am looking for parts for a 1990 bayou 220.Come next month,it will be 16 years old,out lasted my son and still runs like a clock.Today is the first time I had changed rubbers out on it from new.Talk about dry rot with no threads!
Anyway,I'm looking for a few replacement parts that I really need to replace. The first one is one of the front hub inside bearing. The other part is a starter clutch acc.I had replaced some of the parts on that in the pass, but it just didn't last without replacing the hold clutch.I can get everything local from the stealer, not dealer I hate to say,but I am looking to go others.Anybody have any ideas? |

On my 220 Bayou where the front wheels attach to the frame, it is loose by 1/8 inch or so. That is in the area where the grease fitting is.
It clanks quite loud when the front wheels hit a bump. It's been doing this for quite a while now. Are there bearings in there that need replacing? Is it dangerous to drive? Is it a big job to fix? Thanks |

I've just bought a 2000 Bayou 220 that is in excellent conditon so I'm pretty excited about it. I have a couple of questions that hopefully you Bayou owners can help me with:
1)When I first press the throttle, the engine sort of has a "clack" sound. Is this normal or something I should look into? It runs great, doesn't smoke etc. 2)I notice that the front wheels lean in at the bottom and out at the top, is this normal or is there an adjustment for the "camber"? |

I have a 2002 220, I belive it was the last year of the 220, but anyway, The machine was bought used (low hours)$1200. It runs great, My wife and I are not small people, the machine is slightly over loaded with one of us on it and it just takes it! The only thing I have done to it was a new and larger battery which required a mod to the hold down. Funny thing about this quad is it uses a little oil, like 1oz per hour of use, that doesn't bother me because I realize air cooled engines are not as "tight" as liquid cooled engines. Others I have talked to said this is not uncommon. The exaust has a snappy sound, cool but a little loud, and the centrifugal clutch "rattles" until it is engaged.
Otherwise good bang for the buck! Its top speed is 1 mph faster than my Prarie 360 4x4, about 43 mph. I was thinking of putting a tach on the 220 but I have no idea what max RPM is, also is there a rev limiter or does the small carb hold it back? I'm not using it like a racer, I just don't want to hurt it by over revving it. The engine sounds like its screaming at 35+mph, I normally ride about 30mph on fire/back roads. |

I am new to the site, and I just traded up a Bayou 250...my brother in law says it is a 2002 but everywhere I look I can only find part schematics for a 2003. So I guess it really is a 2003.
I have only one issue with it...the start button will not start the motor after it has set overnight. Now it cranks the engine but it won't start, pull the rope and it will start. Once it has run, maybe 5 minutes, you can turn it off and hit the start button and it will start and continue to start until it has set for an extended period of time. Anyone else have this issue...any fix...cheap and quick? The only thing I have to do is put brakes on it. Getting ready to order those. I have rode it once and that was the day I made the deal. I have read a lot of good reviews about the 220 and the 250. You will probably see me here quite a bit asking questions from you experienced 220/250 owners! |

have you had any luck with your 88 bayou. I am having the same problem with mine. It seems to have week spark. I am going to get another battery and see if that makes a diffrence. Does it need a battery to be pull started. Tthe shop manual did not say if that was the case but listed the battery and a potential problem. Any help would be appreciated.

If it sat unused for more than six months your going to have to rebuild that carb totally or purchase one at your local atv parts place. Try to switch carbs with a friends bike if you can-that,s a sure way to know. General rule to remember; gas, spark & air = run.

The drain plug is on the bottom of the engine-there should be a hole in the skid plate that allows your socket to get to the bolt. My opinion only but I don't change the oil filter everytime. Back in my day the bikes didn't even have oil filters. The air filter box is located under the seat. Pop loose the spring clips on the air box lid and you can go from there. Make sure to clean the element with warm soap & water, let dry , then put some motor oil or filter oil on it and squeeze out the excess oil. replace everything & go ride.
