It must have been the diaphram then. I just remember the salesman saying that it was what was causing the problem. He said they shouldn't have gone with rubber or the older models didn't have that same problem. I probably have it all wrong. I just remember something about a rubber part in the carburetor.

well there is also a rubber tipped float needle that corrodes under the rubber tip and swells the tip up and thus causein fuel problems but the newer float tips are made up of something else i cannot think of what it is but in the old days the tips were brass like the float needle itself was made of -corey-

Home > Vehicle Parts & Accessories > ATV Parts & Accessories > NEW ATV TRX CARBURETOR 300CC TRX 300 TRX300 FW CARB(#230282194432)
try the above link for the trx carb, its a pattern part but ive been running it now for a month with no problems , I got the part from the sellar within 5 days (to uk ) The only mod you will have to make is to slighly inlarge the hole were the cable enters carb body, you only have to increase hole size by about 0.040 inch. I did it with a battery drill it took 2 seconds to do. You still get to keep standard air box, and mine went in without removing the air box. I just moved the rubber hose from air box to carb, there is a manaul pump on bottom of float boal just give it 2 pumps to prime carb and it will start without choke. |

Corey...That's it..that's what the dealer told us was the cause of most of our fuel leaking. It was the rubber tip float needle and it didn't make sense to him why they changed from all brass. He seemed quite familiar with it so I'm guessing we weren't the first to bring a machine in for that repair.

I fitted a TRX300 carb to fix fuel flooding and no throttle response on a 1990 KLF300C. After reading this post earlier I decided that rebuilding a carb 3 or more time plus needing a new diaphram was a waste of time. The new carb works well with only the idle speed needing adjusting, I didn't even need to open the hole for the throttle cable.

Hey guys, I just googled my problem with my bayou, and wound up here. I've read this whole entire thread, as basically have the same problem with mine. My father and i have been putting our time in this for a while now, and we are left scratching our heads. We've replaced the floats and the valve, and at first we thought we fixed it with that, because it didnt leak the whole time we were in the garage; pretty close to an hour, but when we went back out in the garage the next day, there sat a puddle of gas under the bike, but on top of that we have another problem. when we start it up the bike runs fine, no miss fires, great throttle response, but after about 10 min it becomes real snotty to say the least, at idle the bike runs fine but as soon as you touch the throttle it burps and miss fires, but if your lucky enough to get it rev'd up without it dieing the miss fires go away. We have also noticed the voltage regulator gets very warm, and once it becomes warm is when the bike becomes snotty. The previous owner replaced that once already. Does this happen on top of your guys' problems too?

hello as far as the regulater gettin warm i take to be normal mine does also but cools off when i ride and mine does not miss .and for the other problems shut the gas valve off at nite or when done rideing,as for poping and gettin rude that could be the rubber intake that bolts to the head there is an oring on the part that touchs the head and when it gets warm itll expand and let air in replace the oring and inspect for craks on the manifold ,also check your battery for proper charge and see if it gettin the charge from the regualter and then even matbe check compression and valve lash hope this may be helpfull -corey-

Cobra, you sound like you have carb problems and a completely separate problem with the regulator, and maybe the coil, the spark plug wire. You can check the coil with a cheap ohmmeter.
as for it dying when you crack the throttle, its normally an air leak between the carb and the head, meaning its the manifold leaking pulling in extra air. Since you did a lot with the carb, best simple guess is the carb clamp is not tightened this time. |

So far we checked the Intake throat, that connects the Carb to the Intake of the engine, and on of the bolts was loose on that, So we tightened it and started her up. Ran pretty good for about 5 to 10 min then it did the same thing it used to do. So we took off the carb again and the intake throat, and put some RTV Red on Both Sides of the Rubber piece in between the Throat and the intake of the engine. We put it back on and had to wait for it to dry. So we dont know if its fixed yet.
We Checked the Coil and Spark Plug wire, and those were fine, but a friend of ours has a gut feeling that its something electrical that is the problem. So the trouble shooting continues. And a question for luigi1953, What relay did you mean, that's probably the only thing we didn't check so far. |

On 03/03/2008 Benny Palmateer posted a solution,,,,,,
A TESTIMONIAL!!!!!! I did have a 300 Honda TRX Fourtrax (Model 1994 I Think???) which was in bad shape,,,,with worn out front/rear bearings, bad front/rear ring gear/pinion etc. It had been driven in bad environments and later was wrecked to the point it was not worth reparing. I allowed it to be used for parts to other friends Fourtrax. I was able to get the carb off the Honda before it was taken for a part. It is now on the Bayou 300 and the engine now performs much better than when the 300 was originally purchased. The carb that came off the Honda is a Kiehin just as the carb on the Kawasaki. Before the Honda Kiehin was broken down both carbs were examind side by side and there seems to be some minor differences. I have no idea what these external differences mean. When the carbs were both broken down the internals in the Honda Kiehin appear to better engineered; tolerences, material, etc. The Honda Kiehin was not used for at least 3 years and was cleaned up, put back together, and placed on the Bayou. The Bayou cranked immediatly with no choking and idled perfectly. When the throttle was opened the engine RPMs came up with no hesitation or backfiring. It has had about two tanks of gas run through it and still runs great,,,,no leaks, no hesitation, no choking, no backfiring. The Honda Carb feels like it gets the Kawasski engine RPMs up much faster than the original carb as well as additional acceleration/power on each gear shift and throttle application. The Honda Throttle lever and cable was used but the Honda choke cable and lever was in bad shape due to the wreck. So, a new choke cable and lever was installed which is spring loaded to stay off. The plunger for the choke is the same as came on the Honda carb. The other day the outside temp went down to about 30 degrees F. The engine was cold and required some minor choking to get cranked. Once cranked the choke lever was released allowing the choke to go off. The engine idled perfectly. After a minute or so of warming up, the engine performed great and did not require any choke. Thanks Benny!!!! Jglong3 |

Did anyone else try the TRX Carb swap? I couldn't find the part anywhere.
I just cleaned my carb out and after total installation a brass joint spacer ring of some sort fall off the peg when pull starting it. I didn't remove the choke cable so I cleaned it still dangling off the bike. So that's what happens when you have limited tools at home. The motor still stumbles but at least I can somewhat give it throttle before falling on it's face. I have to leave the choke on to do so though just like everyone else. I guess I will research where the hell this part goes and try again in the morning. I just bought the bike Friday night and it is super clean except for the carb problem. Any input on the TRX carb or anything else would be awesome. |

I have yet to get my hands on the Honda carb and my bayou just sits in the garage for like 4 years now. I keep getting outbid on ebay, as you never know what you will win so there is a limit to what i will pay. there have been some defective carbs sold too. It appears the trx carbs changed around 2000 and the newer ones may not work. I will get a carb someday.
brass spacer, wish you would have said how big it is, like the diameter if its round. there is one where the choke cable screws in. you can go to the bayou parts site on Kawasaki and start looking for something similar. you should be able to trace it. as for the choke cable. you must have it in the carb or the atv will never run right, even if its not connected up on the handle bar. I think it would act like the carb is always on choke. since the needle is not closing the hole in the choke system. the bayou carb problem seems like Kawasaki picked the wrong carb and it definitely has to do with the float needle and the needle seat which you cannot change. I have real doubts I would ever buy another Kawasaki of any kind, atv or bike. $375 for a replacement carb is ridiculous when Kawasaki knows it was their fault in the first place. If this was an automobile, they would have been forced to recall and replace the carb free as its definitely a fire hazard from leaking gas. I definitely wont buy another 300 bayou carb. I did try a lakota carb and the jetting is way off. runs terrible. I also tried a XL 350 honda carb and it is too tall, not enough room to mount it. I hate to switch to a mikuni but my 88 warrior never has a carb problem. |

Ebay is selling a carb for the TRX 98 and above it looks alot like the same one on my 97. Not sure why they start at that date but someone has to know.
The ones on Ebay are brand new so you don't have to worry about getting some used problem from someone else. The spacer is about 5mm wide and appears a needle may go through it. No worries I will look in little while. BTW the TRX Carb is 149.00 shipping included. They say install and you are on your way. I'm going to contact the dealer selling them and see what they say. This one has the primer pump like described in a earlier post. That would be sweet! I'm getting ready to buy one if I get the right feedback from them and I will let you know. I have two other bikes and this is just a starter project for me to play with I picked it up cheap. |

Will be interested to in how this swap goes. I checked the pictures on ebay and it looks like you dont use the original choke as there is no where for that to go. A previous thread suggests the lever at the bottom acts as a pump primer so thats one original part removed from the equation which cant be a bad thing. Keep us posted.

Hello to all. I'm somewhat reluctantly working on a Kaw Bay 300 2WD. It belongs to my niece-in-law that lives with my mother-in-law. I feel it is prudent to state the "in-law" bit, as I have had "bad" relations with both in the past. Some feelings were hurt...mostly mine...some property was almost burnt down...mostly mine and not by my hands! My teenage niece-in-law claims to have done nothing wrong....and her grandmother ( my mother-in-law) can't see, or don't want to see the error of her evil ways...so according to them, I'm just the biggest Ahole for expressing my concern when my property gets stolen and some almost gets burnt down to the ground, after I returned from a fishing trip. My wife was home, but she also tends to have a "blind eye" when it comes to her niece. At least she sided with me at the time of the mischief and she even agreed that her niece was desperately in need of some mental help. After all was said and done, I decided to try to "keep the peace...forgive and forget" and that's not been easy.
So here I am, trying to be the nice son or uncle-in-law and work on some more junk for them! BTW, I have worked on and sometimes fixed just about anything you can think of, besides NASA rockets, time machines, etc., etc. Well...some time ago and after getting along better with the in-laws...they asked me to look at the ATV and see if I could fix it. Well, I googled the problem and this forum is where I ended up. The carb is doing the same as other poster's. My mother-in-law discovered it was leaking gas from underneath. Not knowing any better, she decided to "plug" the hole at the bottom of the air box with a piece of stick and hose clamp. After they brought the ATV over for me to look at, and after I took the seat off, I noticed that the air box was full of gas! So, it's kinda ironic that my niece was riding on a potential fire bomb...especially since months before she got the ATV, she seemed to be so eager to play with fire and deliberately try to burn other people's property down...allegedly, that is. Sure enough, when not running, the carb steadily leaks gas into the box. The petcock is wore out, so it doesn't stop the flow to the carb when closed and the carb is messed up due to it leaking gas. My first thought is/was the floater and/or needle is sticking and the petcock will need to be replaced or rebuilt. A no-brainer...it seems...'til I came across this thread. So I am going to attempt to repair these two the best I can, as I was only given a budget of only $50. Of coarse I will soak it in distilled vinegar (~$3 a gal.) as opposed to chemical dip ($20-$25 a can) and blow it out before the rebuild kit goes in. I'm not going to put any of my $ in it, as my forgiveness only goes so far. First, I'm going to need a rebuid kit for the CVK KEIHIN carb. Next I need either a new petcock or an o ring kit. Here is my immediate problem keeping me from knowing the exact parts of what I need: They bought the used, raggedy ATV about 6 months ago. They don't know what year it is. I told them to call the little "rinky dink" cycle shop where they bought it from and ask them. Well they called, and the fine folks at that shady place didn't even know! I'm guessing it's a '88 to '95 model...maybe?? I've tried finding pics of it, and the closest I found was maybe a '94, but that pic was of a 4X4 and not a 2WD. It's red and black...has the Kawasaki Bayou 300 sticker on the sides with blue and purple s-line graphics. It has a "Differential" sticker closer to the rear on the side below the seat. It has two head lamps mounted in the front rack. Also, it has reverse if that helps. Maybe someone here can help me identify the year. I can post pics if needed. MY Q's: Are there numbers on the engine or body somewhere that will indicate the year? Will the carb rebuild kits that are sold on ebay ($16-$25) be good enough? I have tried to find the specific petcock and/or o ring rebuild kit that was mentioned early in this thread, and for the life of me, can't find any moose or moose racing o ring kits, just clothing and so on. I would really appreciate some advice pertaining to my Q's and any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Like I stated, I was given a budget of only $50 to put into this used ATV and I'm not sure if my in-laws would be willing to spend in extra, as they live on a fixed income. I started to tell them I couldn't fix it and that they would have to take it back to the "shady grady, fly by night" cycle shop....and see if $50 would even cover their labor, or just the time it probably takes them to take a crap! Anyway, some links, directly to what I'm searching for would be very helpful. If I can get what I need from ebay or a place that accepts paypal, that would also be great, as I don't have any credit cards, nor do I want any. This is a nice site with tons of info. and plenty of helpful members. I believe, I'm at the right place. I want to get this ATV fixed and out of my yard! Oh yeah, before I forget, my first bike was, I think, a '88, KX-80 big wheel. I was 15 years old. That thing had 6 gears and the power band, and from 0 to 60, it would hall tail and scream like an angry bumble bee through all the gears! My next bike, at the age of 18 was a KDX-200 air cooled 4 stroke. I miss that bike. It handled good like the 80, and was good on gas. Over the years, I missed having those bikes and the great experiences, so I decided to start looking for another one. Now, I'm 36 years old and about a year ago, I finally found a cow that I could afford to get with my income tax money. I found a good running '89 KX-500. It certainly is a blast to ride...if I could just hang on! It's hard to keep the thing from spinning out, as it's got enormous torque and will put you on your a** if you're not careful! I should say, if I'm not careful! I have to take it easy as possible with that bike. I've busted my head, skinned-up my arms, legs, punctured my leg pretty bad and scratched-up my back really bad. And all of that was the first few weeks after I got it. I kept thinking...if I fall off...jump back on...I will eventually get use to it, or die trying. Well, I'm still trying to get use to it! I have mellowed out a good bit. I think it's mostly from fear of the beast getting away from me and not being able to get back up! I'm a lot older than I was when the 80 and 200 were my thrill seekers. The guy I bought the 500 from said he had it rebuilt and some performance stuff is on the bike that I know about. He also warned me not to kill myself! I have come close, and no, I don't have a death wish, just a love to have something that powerful move my big butt! I have tried to get my 7 year old to ride on the back with me, but he refuses...I can't imagine why! Yeah...my KX-500 ain't no kiddie ride or for the faint of heart! Glad to be here and thanks. |
