Bayou Starter Clutch Problems: whining

I have a working 1995 bayou 220 - It starts fine with a pull start. I recently opened up the case to view the starter clutch, and noticed it sitting sideways in the case, not making contact with the pinion gear which is attached to the starter motor. The result is that when I hit the starter button, it whines- but does not engage that starter clutch, and thus not engaging the flywheel.

Any suggestions?

It seems a bit sloppy when I push it in its home. Will a new starter gear (Part 39076) also known as Limiter, Starter, IDLE - solve this problem?

I'm having the exact same problem, did you ever get the problem solved or figure out what was wrong?

Sounds like either the one way bearing has colapsed or the casings are flogged out and it's slopping around in there
