Default Mule 2500 Jumps Out Of Gear

I just bought 2 mules- a 2500 and 1000, condition unknown. I have only brought the 2500 home, as it appeared to be a little easier to work on. These were both used at a plant of some sort- both have full metal cabs, flashing lights, etc. They are both well used.

Anyway, I get the 2500 home, put a hot battery on, it would not turn over with the key. Finally figured out it was in gear. The gearshift was stuck, so I reached back and got it out of gear- it started right up, no smoke, runs great! I am thrilled, because I got these at a pretty good deal... BUT- when I manually put it in gear, it kicks out- forward is worse than reverse. I think it is because the shifter cable is pretty much stuck, but don't want to buy a $100 + cable if that is not the issue. Does this sound like the cable, or am I going to have to spend some major bucks working on the tranny? Any help would be appreciated.

I am sure I will be back with more ???'s on the 1000.

Thanks in advance,
Kip

It sounds like the cable is out of adjustment. It is pretty easy to adjust, and will indeed cause the Mule to jump out of gear. If the cable is intact, I would remove it, lube it up good with oil, reinstall it and adjust it to get the travel centered.

Also vrify the idle speed is correct, a fast idle speed will prevent the gears from engaging fully and make the tendency to pop out.
