    Default Kawasaki Bayou 220 problem

Hello all, I'm a newbie to the forum and I have a question for all you gurus out there. I recently aquired a 98 Bayou 220 and I cannot seem to get it to start. When I hook the battery up to a car battery it will kick off by pull starting it and it will run for a while. The ATV battery shows a ful 12v but I'm not sure of the amps. The push button start does not work at all either. The green light will come on and when I press the button to start it I hear a click come from under the seat and the light turns off...then nothing. Anybody have any clues???

Ive just gone thru that same problem and after hrs of going over it i found that the starter was not working. I rebuilt the starter and then hooked up a push button switch to the solenoid and now it starts and it shuts off thru the on/off switch and works with the key. I know it sounds like a "mickey mouse" way to fix it but after cleaning all the switches and connections and still having problems i figured this was the best fix hope that helps

If you get a click from the solenoid it means you're getting a signal, what you need to do is make sure you are getting 12v to your starter when the starter button is depressed also a bad earth can cause these sorts of problems, follow the - side battery cable to where it bolts to the frame and make sure you have a good earth there, undo the bolt and clean off any rust or paint with sand paper so you have good contact to ground.

Ok, I checked and cleaned the grounds but still nothing. I crossed the solenoid with the fuse with a screwdriver and it wanted to start but I did not try long enough in fear of frying or melting something. I'm not sure what to do...

ok, pull your starter out and earth the body of the starter on the engine and try the starter button and see if it spins

The starter turned over and I could hear the pistons making compression out the muffler.

Could the voltage regulator or CDI have anything to do with my problem?

Pull the spark plug out and hold it against the engine (with the cap still on )
with the ignition turned on push the starter button and see whether there is any spark at the spark plug

Ok, I found some problems. Turned out that the grounds from the battery to the motor were dirty and the gas was a bit old. I cleaned all the grounds and 12v contacts and drained the old gas and added new gas with carb cleaner. Seems like it's running real strong now. I appreciate all the help here. Everyone lead me in the right direction to figure this one out. Thanks a bunch!

check all your connections and make sure everything is plugged in where it's supposed to be and pull all your plugged connectors and clean them with a contact spray sometimes they get a build up of green stuff in them which causes a bad connection and last but not least Go get yourself a workshop manual it's worth it's weight in gold

    Exclamation I've got similar problems

    Hi,
I have a '94 Bayou 220 which has problems. When I turn the key, the neutral light doesn't light up, the electric starter doesn't work and the horn doesn't work. I have just bought a new battery which puts out 13.5volts and this hasn't solved my problem. I currently use the recoil starter to get it going. Once idling, the neutral/reverse lights, horn (barely) and starter motor all work (I accidentally pressed the start button and it made a noise). However, if I rev it up, the nuetral light fades away unless I turn the front lights on. Also, if I rev it up the horn doesn't work unless I turn the front lights on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mel.

there exists a relay attached to the starter solenoid under the seat. the relay sends a signal to the solenoid which in turn activates the starter. I bought the relay at o'rielys auto part for around $30, considerably less than the dealer. take the relay with you and be sure to get the exact same one.
you can also take the battery with you so they can check the amps. good luck!

Hello all.. I have a 2000 bayou 220.. with the same problems.. I replaced the starter cylinoid, relay , battery, spark plug. when i make connection where the fuse is on the starter cylinoid the fuse blows everytime.. i have stripped all the wires to make sure there is no bare wire showing and its all good there.. the lights do not come on when you turn the key on for neutral nor does any of the buttons work.. when i cross the starter cylinoid the motor will turn over and it making compression but wont start... not sure if the spark plug is making sparks or not thats gonna be my next thing to see.. Please let me know if you have any suggestions... thanks..
