hello,
I just signed up here. I have a ninja 650r as a daily rider and a kawi fan. I was curious if anyone had any experience with the clutch setup on a bayou 300 4x4, its a 95' model. I've been helping my neighbor out with it. The first time I rode it I could tell it was slipping. I'm an auto mechanic by trade so I took a look at it for him. Everything appeared to be in working order when I took it apart. I know the centrifugal clutch is expensive but I felt it was the problem. It still has lining on it and grooves down the center, no chunks taken out or anything. The lining is not very thick but I don't know how thick it should be. I installed new secondary clutch friction plates and the drum portion of the centrifugal clutch first ( to save money) Put it back together and filled it with the correct oil. Of course it still seems to slip. To me the next (and final) thing to do would be to cough up the $200 and replace the centrifugal part but it never hurts to ask. any Ideas ??? thanks Justin |

I dunno, he bought it last year and had never changed the oil. So yes that could be the problem. I know the place he bought it from, their a bunch of hacks. He didn't know, it was his first ATV purchase. I ordered and new centrifugal clutch yesterday, we'll see if that remedies the problem. Not much else to replace after that.

Yeah, there is. I bet the clutch pack is shot if some hosers owned it before. I would cancel the centrifical clutch, and replace the springs and plates on the standard clutch.

yep, I adjusted the main screw so it just makes contact with the release bearing (no pressure) and set the release cam adjuster so that it has no pressure on it either. I don't have a manual, but common knowledge tells me this is how it is done so there is no slippage from that clutch.

Well, if that new centrifical clutch doesnt help the slipping, it is definately that clutch pack. Did you replace the springs on the pressure plate? Those wear out after a while and make for lots of slippage.

I didn't do the pressure plate. When I pulled that clutch apart everything looked really good. But since I was in there I figured I would do those components anyway. Do the pressure plates warp? There wasn't any hot spots or abnormal looking wear on this one.

No, I am not talking about replacing the pressure plate. I am talking about the springs that push on the pressure plate.

Sounds like you may not have adjusted your clutch correctly, I found this on the web for you

Thanks for the info. I installed the new centrifugal clutch last night along with the secondary clutch springs. So everything is new. It seems alot better, I can actually get over a curb now. Is it just me or are these things really slow. It's like driving a golf cart. I ran it up some heavy grades without any trouble so I don't think anything is slipping but this thing seems damn slow. I guess the last quad I rode was a 660 yamaha (could have something to do with it)

If you run a 2x4 only quad you can expect faster speeds but a 4x4 quad made for utility purposes/trails usually will run alot slower due to it's design. Also factor in if it has an automatic tranny or if it's a manual shift as that can also determine how it will achieve top speed.
We use to have two Honda 4-wheelers...both 93' models...one a 2x4 and the other a 4x4 and the 2x4 was very quick and much more sporty to drive where as the 4x4 (fulltime) was alot slower but would go places the 2x4 couldn't. It all depends on the quad and what it's intended purpose is. |

hello everyone
this is a great site, lots of good answers. My question is a bit unique i think... i spent about 100 hours putting together this rusted out piece of crap four wheeler. every part was rusted that wasn't in the engine and that includes the whole top end. but piece by piece i slowly replaced almost every part in the motor. long story short, the thing ended up running GREAT. i think better than a new one, even though it didn't look it. but anyway, i drove it around for a while, and even pulled some pretty big logs with it. but then my brother was driving it one day and th clutch stopped working. it was weird, because i opened it up and all the parts were there and were shiny new. but the clutch would not work correctly. i would turn it on in neutral ( of course ) and then shift into 1st and the whole thing would jerk forward and either stall or keep going depending on the throttle. and then once your going on it if you step on the brake it will struggle then die. so i left it in the garage for a few weeks not bothering with it because i was busy ect. well, i pulled it out and after playing with it a little i found out that the primary one way clutch did not spin freely. it wouldn't spin the opposite direction without turning over the motor. so i bought an impact set and took the stuck on bolt off. then without doing anything else, the clutch spun! when i put the bolt back on, anything slight more than hand tight, and it wont spin. i have NO CLUE how that is possible. i tried it today with the bolt on pretty loose and it works pretty well. it feels slow but i just bought a 225 Yamaha dirt bike so thats probably got something to do with it =) so pretty much after that life story i just wrote, i have no clue how that bolt effects how the thing spins. i thought that maybe i was missing a bearing or a washer or something, but it doesn't look like it to me idk... Thanks SO much for any help. -taylor |
