Occasionally, while in 4wd, the 2wd and 4wd indicators flash back and forth on about 1 second intervals. According the the manual this indicates a problem with the engine break motor. My Kaw dealer, agreed and from his experience replacement of the motor is the fix. However, I checked the resistence between the connections according to the manual EXCEPT the speed sensor test. The results were within specs. The connections looked fine as far as dirt/corrosion are concerned. The Brute goes and and out of 4wd fine, and the engine brake system seems to work. I was wondering if anyone had experienced this. The motor is $260 and I thought of taking off the converter cover and examining the engine brake system. I would prefer to do this and check it, BEFORE putting down cash. I'm experienced with this stuff and I know that sometimes the little things like bad connections and lack of lube can set these things off. Any experience with this out there in Brute Force land?????????????

Perform the speed sensor test, and if it shows up as a problem then what you have is the ECM obtaining a signal that the engine speed is beyond the set point for the speed sensor. Then it will attempt to activate the engine brake, and will fail because the engine is still under power and not looking for compression braking -- hence the error code.
The dealer's scan tool will find the primary error code and companion code for the sensor immediately if it is the problem, and I suspect it is.

I just got my 2005 650 brute out of shop for the same problem except mine would do it all the time in 4 wd or 2 wd after I road it a few miles. Problem was a pinched wire is what they told me and seems to work fine now. I did not ask where the pinched wire was at though.

Truck and RCW,
Thanks for the info. I did the speed sensor test and it went up to 5.0 volts. Of course since this is an intermittent problem, it could be the sensor. It also could be a contact problem. I checked the connection at the sensor and it looked OK. However, I did put some dilectric grease on the contacts. I will look at the wiring. Since I did the test, I've ran it in 2w and 4w with no problem. The one thing I did notice, that points, as RCW suggested, to the sensor, it that when backing off the throttle on a gravel road, the engine brake seemed like it grabbed to quickly and slid the tires. As a side note, I noticed even after the ignition switch was shut off and the purple and Blk/Y wires were connected to the volt meter (digital) it took a few seconds for the voltage to drop off to zero. Must be condensors or something in there holding some volts. If I find something later, I will report it as to the problem. Meanwhile to go check on a wire problem! Thanks. |

Can you please give instructions in How to check the speed sensor. The problem with my atv(2006 750 brute force) is that never switches from 2wd to 4wd the indicator on the display always stays on 2wd. I have checked the switch the actuator the bus connector and everithing is Ok but I can not find the problem

According to the manual for the 05 Brute Force you support the vehicle so the rear wheels can but spun. Remove the seat. Set the hand tester to 25 volts, or so it will read that much. Using the needles for the tester (I used pins or needles-if needed raid you girlfriends or wife sewing box). Stick the postive one into the purple wire (Terminal #5 of the actuator) and the negative one into the Black/yellow terminal #10) When I did this I didn't discontect the actuator plug. It doesn't tell you to.) Turn on the igntion switch, spin the rear wheel and measure the voltage. It should go up to 5.0 volts when you spin the wheel and it doesnt take much to make the 5.0 volts. Check the wires to the sensor, too, while you're at it. I checked all my stuff out and the 2wd/4wd still flashes sometimes but I don't see a problem. However, the Kaw mech said it's probably the engine break actuator moter that's the problem due to the rate of flashing on my display. Let me know what happens.
