I've got a 99 year model 2510. The starter needs to come out and be re built. I've got the kit to do it with, but removing and replacing the starter looks like its going to get pretty involved. Has anyone come up with any shortcuts for this procedure?
Also, has anyone had problems with short life on wheel bearings? Although I cross water quite a bit, I would think they'd last more than one year. |

It is pretty simple to remove the starter, just follow the procedure outlined in the service and repair manual. If it is a gas rig, pay particular attention to disconnecting the negative cable on the battery before you start so you do not blow the Igniter.
My wheel bearings have always lasted the life of the Mule and still been going when I sold them. But, I service them every year and use Hydrotex Hydro-syn 70, not a cheap grease but bearings are not either.

Thanks for the reply. Your right about + cable first. I have seen a lot of ignition systems, as well as automotive ECMs blow from the - being removed first. The worst was on a Diesel Semi. $2,500.00 for the computer
The bearings on mine are non serviceable sealed bearings. I had thought about matching up the bearings with non sealed ones, and putting a grease Zerk in the hub to direct grease into both bearings. However, that would mean a small amount of grease would get into the drum area, and would need periodic cleaning. |

There is no real shortcut to getting the starter off. There is not enough room to reach the bolts on the starter without first removing the clutch cover and driven clutch half. It's not a horrible long job but you'll need to either borrow the tool or make one yourself to hold the driven clutch half from turning.
