Are you 100% sure it is running correct?

If you are I would guess probably either oil of the wrong viscosity or just low. Also clean it up real good, but i doubt that could be the problem unless it is completely caked in mud.

Start by checking your oil filter to be sure it is clean. If good, then remove one of the valve covers and start it and watch to see if it is oiling. If not, then either you have a smashed oil delivery pipe or a bad oil pump or plugged sump pickup screen - the thimble sized screen with the rubber washer.

Some were equipped with optional electric cooling fans for slow operation in hot weather. If you have one of those and the fan is not working, then completely remove the fan and all the shrouds so cooling air gets to the engine, and it should be fine if you use synthetic oil and are not creeping around in 100 degree heat.

by running hot what do you mean like the pipes are glowing red or the jug is getting realy hot ? if thats the case like mrgiggles said the cooling fins on the jug could be covered with mud or filled with mud preventing air flow across to cool due to mud will hold in heat...is this machine liquid cooled by chance.... if so does the fan kick on ?if not liquid cooled some people have put electric fans in the front to help cool the jug blowing air acrossed it and the other thing that could cause high engine temp is the motor is running to lean on fuel its good to make power but the side effects are higher engine temps and burning up the valves and or piston or piston sieze to the piston wall id try cleaning and readjusting the carb first off and doing a good engine clean with a pressure washer and pay close attention to the coolin fins on the jug and then make sure the crank case is also clean as well any mud will hold in the heat and after all that id change the oil and filter and use a quality brand non synthetic oil cause if the oil temp got hotter than what it was designed for it will not protect the motor bearings and such when you drian the oil out itll probably come out like water and really black take some oil and put in the engine while the drain bolt is still out and and flush out that nasty oil get a couple of extra qts of oil to do this flush of the bottom of the crank case do not start the motor with drain bolt out when the oil comes out clear then put the drain bolt back in and fill to spec with the new oil ...hope this may quide you in a repair -corey-

There is no mud whatsoever on the block or the jug. I have already changed the filter and the oil. I have checked the oil screen and nothing in it. Valves are in spec. It gets hot, pipe has glowed a couple of times. This is a 4x4 air cooled does not have a fan. The motor has a little tick in it. Sounds to be coming from the valves. Timing chain looks fine. One thing I noticed with this 4 wheeler you never have to use the choke. Starts up as soon as you touch the starter. And it runs fine. It just seems to be over heating. I have another 300 bayou 91 model 2x4 and it doesn't seem to get half this hot.

I'm guessing it's probably running to lean then. Have you tried running it with the choke on? That will richen up the mixture.

Pull the spark plug and carefully inspect the insulator and electrodes for evidence of lean burning. Here a a reference that may be of help: Spark plug reading

If the plug is good, the engine runs good, and it is just a matter of a red pipe, that is normal with a properly tuned engine that is run hard. Most people never see the red pipe because they do not run that hard, or have jetted a bit on the rich side so they can subsidize the oil companies.
